I think it probably was taken within the challenge dates. Is it allowed to enter a photo that is already uploaded to ones portfolio? |

I think this is related to this.

Yeah it's related but not the same. It is not my picture. I have seen this photo in somewones portfolio a few days ago. It now appears with some modifications in one of the challenges currently being voted on.
I was going to PM the photographer to advice him/her to remove it before it gets DQed when I realized I am not sure if it is actually ileagal to do that.
So I am asking here. Is it allowed to enter a pic that already is uploaded to a portfolio as long as it is taken within the relevant dates?

As Kivet says, it's not against the rules. But it surely is not a good idea. It totally undermines anonymity. And the risk of getting a considerably lower score than the shot would normally earn makes it just not worth it. Poor etiquette, bad taste, an attempt at cheating, - whatever you want to call it - it surely is not a good idea.
Are you certain that the shot in a current challenge is the same one that you saw in someone's portfolio? Maybe it's another shot of the same subject taken at the same time but edited differently. However, if it leads you to the same photographer it is blowing their anonymity.

It is not illegal to enter an image already in one's portfolio as long as it meets all other legal requirements. It is no big deal at all.
Reading where people are wondering if it should be DQed or not proves how out-of-control the DQ process has become and how paranoid people have become as a result.
Anonymity of images is mearly etiquette to prevent biased voting but sharing and discussing images from your own portfolio through PMs with other DPCers is a valuable part of your growth as a photographer. I'd encourage, not discourage that.

I would only add that it IS preferable to put the image in your workshop so it can not be seen by others than those you are getting advice from... I do not have any problems with people collaborating on images. I do it with taterbug all the time. He's my best friend and we often shoot together... |

Anonymity is really a lot more important than the level of etiquette. It is one of the most basic concepts on which our challenges work. Without anonymity they would deteriorate to mere popularity contests. Any sharing of images entered into challenges, or images you are considering for entry, undermines the integrity of the competition. A certain amount is almost unavoidable, such as when two users go out shooting together, or when two users share the same computer. But beyond that certain level, any sharing of challenge images, or encouragement of such, is an attack on the system here at dpc. You can learn without sharing the specific image that you are going to enter.
Edited to add the italicized "challenge".
As always - just my two cents.

It's not "out of control" I agree that communication is important, but I also find anonimity an essential part of the challenge rules and I just wanted to inform the phoographer which is a relatively new member about it. I am not here to try and get as many entries as possible DQ. |

I'm not certain, but I think you can get DQ'd for saying stuff like that. I'll hit the "Recommend this photograph for disqualification" thingy just in case........... ;-P |
