150kb is pretty small for an accurate representation of a photo.
Especially for a site dedicated to photography.
When was the last time the image size has been adjusted upwards to keep in step with increased average connection speeds?
I think 300kb would be a good start.

Hee hee, this horse has been beat to deaty many times over. if it were a cat, it would have been out of lives long ago ;-)
Seriously, 150kb is actually fine for 640px images, or even for slightly oarger (pixel) sizes. If you want some light reading", search on "proposition 800." Good fun!

Figured it was probably discussed before ;) but seriously, today's technology is way past 150kb and 600px image capabilities.

Is there any type of polling/voting on potential suggestions?

The bottom line is that by far the most common screen resolution is 1024x768 and we need to make sure that folks running on that resolution are able to use the site conveniently. That limits us in the size of images we can display, and at the resolutions we run, 150kb is plenty. There has been repeated discussion of increasing the allowable image dimensions somewhat, but no consensus has been achieved as to how/when/if this might happen.
