I have been going through a long, agonizing process with my rebel XT. When I got it, I was new to the world of DSLR's and really didn't have a clue what I was doing. I bought it used on ebay. It would autofocus just fine. However, there was no grid when I looked through the viewfinder, and no little red dots that would light up to show where the focus was. I didn't realize they were supposed to be there until a couple months later when I was using another person's rebel xt. So then I do a side by side comparison between my camera and theirs, and realize that my focus screen that goes up in the viewfinder that has the autofocus grid lazer-etched into it is missing. So I get on the phone with canon and explain this to them. They send me out a new focus screen, along with the metal shim and black metal holder that goes along with it (I was charged for it, of course, since the warranty on the camera wasn't transferrable). But instead of sending me one metal (appears to be copper) shim, they sent me about 15 of them that are all different thicknesses. They said that when the camera is new and being put together at the canon factory, that they don't have any rules or guidelines about how thick the focus screen should be, and it varies from camera to camera. So what the guys at canon apparently do is try different focus screens in each camera to see which one makes it focus properly. Well this is what I am trying to do. I have tried every single shim in my camera twice. I have found that the medium sized ones will create perfect focus in manual focus, while the other sizes won't manual focus (using manual focus, they will be clear in the viewfinder and blurry on the jpeg). But absolutely none of the shims will autofocus correctly. I can switch to autofocus, the red dots will show up on the grid in the correct places, then it will adjust the lens and beep and lock in while in autofocus mode. The only problem is that when it locks in on something, it is still blurry in the viewfinder and also on the jpeg. I've tried this with several lens and get the same result. Not only that, but if I remove the focus screen, shim, and retaining piece and restore it to the way it was when I got it, it still won't autofocus. I had never had a problem with it autofocusing correctly before I tried to put the focus screen in it. Any ideas would greatly appreciated, and thanks for reading this long post!
