I saw these photojournalists - who covered Iraq as photographers not embedded with the military - on a C_SPAN program this morning and decided to check out their website. It must take a lot of courage to do what they do, and they certainly do perform an invaluable service. Be sure to watch the video clip at the site.
Some of the images are a bit graphic, though I did not find them offensive - other than in a general way in regards to the stupidity and tragedy of war.
Food for thought for any of us who ever harbored an interest or desire to be a photojournalist.

I found the photos by Ghaith Abdul-Ahad the most moving. Strong images that make you pause. Looks like he has no fear of getting into the thick of things. And lots of talent to boot.
I hope all the photogs get to stay safe. |

Absolutely amazing. I didn't find it offensive either but it made it hard to breathe for awhile. Powerful, moving images.

Superb work. There are lots of great images out there, this one always upsets me

Just wish that these kinds of image were given more publicity, mabye then the public would stop supporting their respective governments claims that its all done as part of 'the war on terror'.
The fact is we were lied to by our governments and this is all done in our names, makes me feel like never voting again!

This is what I want to do... in fact, I'm selling the house within the year to travel indefinitely and look for projects like this. Thanks for the link!

what makes you say that? |
waste of human potential, the distruction, the cost and suffering -
over what ?
land ? ideas ? religion ? cartoons ?!?
there is no need for any of it ...
and in 100yrs it will matter even less, all things are transitory

it is natural in all species to behave like that. This is just the way it is.
Every religion, every nationality makes the same mistakes. IMHO

I agree...his work was by far the best of the group. Judging by the name though it is very likely that he may have better access than some of the others. Actually looking like the people in the culture and being able to speak the language would be invaluable for blending in and interacting with the people. Someone who looks non-middle eastern would be taking a much larger risk not being embedded. It is unfortunate but unlike past wars the media are much more of a target now and can not rely on a netural stance to save them. |

Thanks for this link. It is a good reminder that no amount of rhetoric or posturing can out-argue an honest window into such a place. I will pass this along. |
