I want to use a .JPG for a background. The text is hard to see. I would like to set the text background to a grey and have it 50% transparent. But I cant figure out the code for it. I can get it to fade both the text and background but not just the text background. Can anyone help?

You could open photoshop, open your background, put a gray layer infront of the current background image, then change the transparency of that layer to 50% -- then you don't gotta worry about something that I think is impossible anyway.

This is a good starting point: //forums.techguy.org/development/175123-html-css-semi-transparent-background-but-full-opacity-text.html

but HTML is not really designed to be able to do this.
If you code it, only Internet Explorer will be able to carry it out.

I dont want to do something only IE will see correctly. I could put an image behind the text but I can't figure out how to make it transparent.

I'm not sure you can do that across all browsers.
It sounds like you might want to use Flash.
Anyway, I'm having problems visualising what you want to achieve in a tasteful way!
Good luck,
Bob

deapee's suggestion is probably the best for simplicity and browser compatibility. I know what you want can be done in IE only sites and can be done in a flash-based site.

But, for a true HTML site, you should either modifiy the jpeg or place all text inside a table with a solid background.

I dont want to cover the entire background image, just behind the text so you can see it. I think it can be done with a .gif but it doesn't seem to work for me.

Gifs can be made transparent, but not semi-transparent. Also, PNG's can be made transparent and also semi-transparent, but a glitch in IE doesn't work well with alpha transparencies on PNG's.

make a table over the background

...to make it more clear try entering the following code in the left box in this link and click the button "Edit the Text and Click Me"

First Row
background="bgdesert.jpg">
Second
Row

Image Background

Both gif and jpg files can be used as HTML backgrounds.

If the image is smaller than the page, the image will repeat itself.

Ok, even I am not this hard headed. I'll have to settle for a solid background.

Thanks for keeping me from waisting even more time.

That's probably the best design idea anyway. Users will appreciate readability much more than the effort you spend on trying to make a background semi-transparent.

K.I.S.S. is still the best policy in designing web sites.

I did it here just by cutting up the image and making it translucent in Photoshop, and then applying it to the table...you can see it in the iFrames. Pain in the ass but it works.

I have it working now but it uses a script that my browser stops until you let it load. I dont want it to kick up warnings to people comeing to my site. Should I avoid the script?
