I am new to using a wide angle lens and I notice in some photos you can see the the curvature of the lens. Does that ruin the value/quality of a photo?

I take a lot of photos over water, and the wide angle lens gives me much better photos but if the curvature is bad -- then I don't know what to do. My husband says to make sure the water horizon is centered to minimize it.

Any thoughts?

I, for one, absolutely love perspective distortion with utlra wide angle lenses. I really like the look of it. Some day I'll get one.

I never tried it, but I think some programs like Photoshop have a function to fix perspective distortions.

i always liked those.... especially if you get a REALLY wide angle, or even a fish-eye lens to get the big curves. I don't think it takes away at all.

It irritates me when a horizon is all curved by one, or if buildings are all pointing toward each other. I think it bothers me most though, when it's only slightly visible. Kind of makes it look sloppy, like an error.

Hi Renee,
As Jacques has noted, you can choose to use the distortion for artistic effect, or try to rid yourself of it. If you choose the latter, software is your friend. There are many programs out there that have the ability to correct lens distortion, but be forewarned, it is not a simple process. Photoshop itself does not have good tools for this, but there are "plug-ins" available that can help.
The mathematical relation between input and output can be very complex, and varies with the lens used and also with the zoom position. Also, the software often is written for technically advanced users. I've not experimented much with this, though it is something I would like to get better at.
