I'm new here...like today new. Anyway, I was reading up some reviews on a Nikon DX1 and someone said, "its a nice camera, but no pro. photographer would ever use this." Its not exactly word for word what he said, but pretty much what he said though. Do you guys feel that digital photography has the same value as film/SLR type photography? Ok well hope to hear from you guys soon.

I don't own a DX1 or any D-SLR camera; however I do have an opinion and I do plan on getting one (preferably Nikon D100 as it looks very nice).

As for the DX1 being "professional" -- I don't really see how it's not. It has a full image manipulation feature set, expansion for new lenses, and many other features that don't limit you at all.

Although as for digital vs film ... I don't work for an advertising or media-related firm, however I can see where in some cases a digital would work well over a 35mm: the internet. It really just depends on what you're doing. If you're a professional photographer for print ads, then I can see where a digital wouldn't work as well (in the case of Time Square and its huge ads). I can't imagine all the photos from news.yahoo.com being taken with film and then scanned it -- it's just not feasible these days.

It all comes down to your intended goal. What is that, if I may ask?

My goals? For now, nothing insane, I just want to get aquainted with the new digital camera I got. I want to use it to make posters and print projects because I'm a graphic design major. Plus with my new F707 I don't have to scan in images anymore. I figure I already have the old film SLR camera, might as well get a digital as well. I guess the digital one is to help me get better at photography because I can take pictures and see the outcome real fast. With my SLR I have to go develop what might be a batch of bad pictures, with the digi-cam I know right away if I screwed up.
Ok what are your goals?...since no one else is really posting anything anywhere on this site haha.

I just take pictures for fun. It's just something that I enjoy. I wouldn't mind getting a job with National Geographic where they would fly me to exotic locations and I could take pictures for their magazine. Obviously the camera I have now wouldn't cut it... a D1X or D100 most likely would though.

The way things are headed technologically, digital photography really is the next thing. Everybody wants things now -- and digital photography does that for you. As well, everything is done through computers, and that's just what a digital camera is.

It's all for fun tho.

Hey Langdon, you never know man, maybe you should apply for a job at National Geographic. I don't know if they'll let you take a picture even if its with that 4000 dollar DX1 haha, I'd think a professional place like them would only use film. I'd sure like to see how it goes if you ever did try Nat. Geo.Maybe you'll get a great job taking pictures of rhinos and tigers as they chase you around Africa.

Yeah I think its great that everything is going digital. I just hope we don't lose the ability to work with film. Like I said, the digital I have now is just practice before I get really into film. I'd have to say that when it comes to video however, I still prefer film over digital. something about digital video just isn't as nice as film. Its funny how all the digital video guys are trying to blur and soften their digital footage to imitate film. Oh well, I'm going off on a tangent, thats a topic for DV's forum hehe.
