You have commented on 55 images (45%) in this challenge.

however, this is typical pattern for me (as far as comments are concerned)
just haven't been able to rate that last image, i could SWEAR its a 10 though!

I'll see what I can do. I haven't started voting on that one yet, but it's going to be a crappy weekend here (cold, windy, wet) which means I won't be out enjoying the great outdoors... Sigh. Lovely weather all week, while I'm cooped up at work, then *this* for the weekend. Bah!

The problem is the time commitment. Let's say it takes an average of 10 seconds to vote but 45 seconds to vote and comment. This could take a long time to vote if you attempt to comment on every vote.

Since joining the site in November I've cast 6408 votes and made 255 comments giving me a comment to vote ratio (CVR) of 4%. Krisby's comment to vote ratio is much better at 268/1679 (16%). Yet skiprow has a CVR of 3811/22574 (17%)... he has cast 22,574 votes!

But let's look at the time commitment then:
myself: 6408*10+255*35=73005 sec => 20 hrs
krisby: 1679*10+268*35=26170 sec => 7 hrs
skiprow: 22574*10+3811*35=239075 sec => 66 hrs

I'm guessing that early on this wasn't so bad as there was less submissions but now there are more and more. Some of several hundred submissions. For example, lets look at this week's challenges. There are a total of 614 photos to judge (and that seems like a low number). This works out to almost two hours of judging without comments.

(NB: the tribute challenge took a lot more time to judge since I had to google every tribute to figure out if they caught the essence of the photographer.)

So I find it impossible to comment on every picture. When I do it is usually because I really like the picture or there was something that I would have changed.

It would be an interesting stat to figure out the sites average CVR and each individual's CVR but as the number of submissions go up I suspect this number is going to decline.

Agree it's a huge time commitment. I break it into sessions - generally don't do it all at once. I've been consistent with my personal goal of 20% on each challenge I vote. In smaller ones like this, I try to do more (ie same amount of time, but more comments per challenge.) The one very good thing about trying to comment on all the pictures is you do indeed take a lot longer than 10 seconds on each one. You get to see more. :-)

For the sake of the challenge, I hope the quality of your comments matches the intent of their quantity.

I comment on between 5-10 percent of the images I vote on. For me the quality of the comments I make during a challenge are more important than the quantity.

I decided some time ago that comments were worth more to me and others than a vote is. I have opted for quality rather than quantity, I vote on at least 20% of every challenge and I comment on every vote. Time just doesn't allow for me to do any more because as well, we have to do some shooting and I have barely had time to hold up my end with Critique Club since we've had so many challenges lately.

1 Deadly Sins:
Stats: You have rated 47 of 133 images (35%) in this challenge.

7 Heavenly Virtues:

If I vote on a challenge then I decide to vote 100% of that challenge. Not sure why but I just do.

I'm not sure what happens in the voting if you don't vote for a particular picture. I would think that the reason you don't vote for a picture is because for some reason you don't think it is very good. If that is the case then it would make sense to go ahead and vote for it so that it would get the proper weighting amoung all of your votes otherwise it might end up with a higher overall score then it deserves.

Anyway, I do get the point of commenting and I do try to comment more but it is hard...

I suppose the quality of the comment will be determined by the photographer whose image I commented on. Some may find them useful, some may not. So far, 759 out of 808 of my comments have been marked Helpful. I seem to have a pretty good track record.

Since it's been miserable weather here the past two days, I've had some time on my hands, so I'm taking up the challenge:

Virtues Challenge:
Stats: You have rated 120 of 121 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 118 images (98%) in this challenge.

Heart Challenge:
Stats: You have rated 97 of 140 images (69%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 45 images (32%) in this challenge.

Country Life Challenge:
Stats: You have rated 218 of 218 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 36 images (17%) in this challenge.

I try to find something positive to say about every image as well as let the photographer know what I don't like about their photo. Hopefully some will find them helpful.

Weather's been quite lousy here as well. As a result, everyone should have at least one comment in Virtues.
