That means the SI must use Canon cameras ;) |

Well, rats. After reading all this I decided to do a dust bunny check. Set the camera to f/32, took a pic, loaded it and did an autolevels on it.
EWWWWW!!!!
So Don, seeing as how you had such a fun experience, I'm tempted to not even try it myself, but don't really know where to take it to get it cleaned.
I'm a little surprised there aren't cat hairs...

No cat hairs, but you do have a face in the clouds. ;^) I've outlined it in light grey.

Wish me luck - just ordered a cleaning kit.
It should help with the bunnies, but I'm still a little worried about what to do with the troll.... |

Cleaning kit came (Copperhill does a good job, for those who're interested - order confirmed immediately, shipped immediately, and got a free plastic slinky to boot!).
Rainy day so I gave it a shot. Here's the result. Note that I now need to figure how to get rid of the circles. Very annoying, those.
Before cleaning:
After the 2nd pass of cleaning - (1st pass didn't do much, I suspect because I probably failed to get any Eclipse on the pad.)
I can live with that, assuming I can get rid of the circles...

I had a tough sensor smudge last year, but a little Eclipse cleared it right up.
Oddly, my external flash head then swiveled around 360 degrees and spewed some green substance all over my camera bag, which spontaneously ignited, but otherwise no problems. |

I haven't actually read ALL the posts, but how do you clean the sensor? just use the small puff blower? I have one and it doesnt seem to be blowing any wind.
I also have a speck of dust on the inside of the lens. I can't get to it, but I can see it. ANy ideas how to clean that? |

Some people use blowers, but with some blowers you have just as much chance of blowing dust ONTO the sensor as off. Mechanical compressors and cans of compressed air are especially risky (i.e. don't even think about it) because they can blast lubricants and other chemical deposits onto your sensor. Most people around here use either Eclipse & PecPads or Sensor Sweep brushes.
Don't worry about the speck in your lens. It's fairly common for unsealed zoom lenses to pick up dust on the inside as the zooming action pumps air in and out. The speck is too far from the focal plane to ever show up in an image. At worst, you'll lose a really tiny (imperceptible) bit of contrast. |

Not only is the dust in the shot, the water in the background is not level. Isn't this one of the basics? This is surprising for a "professional shoot". |

Nobody else thought it was strange to see sensor dust on images at a site like Sport's Illustrated? |
I'm surprised that a man looks at a spot like this and looks at sensor dust ;) |

Who's to say I didn't look at the entire image. ;) Just shows that I can appreciate many things in life. He-he.
...as for my initial observation, I thought it was interesting that an image for a high profile publication would not have edited/cleaned up the image a bit by removing the sensor dust spots. |
