Is it just me or is the quality of the D70 kit lens not all that great. I mean it is a decent lens and much better than some of the crap I have had for my film camera in the past but the results I get with this lens can not even come close to the results I get with a basic 50 mm lens. It just overall seems to lack sharpness. Also the contrast and colors it produces are a little weak when compared to the 50 mm. |

It isn't you. The 18-70 is a good, maybe even great lens *for its price*. But it certainly isn't the best (or most expensive) zoom, and prime lenses in general are sharper than zoom lenses. |

No doubt the 50mm is sharper. I like my 18-70 sure its not as fast as the 50mm 1.8 but its great for a kit lens and the only thing I could think of repalcing it with is the 17-55 2.8 but thats a $1300.00 lens.
For me its a great walking around lens.

I hated it and replaced it with the Tanrom 28-75mm 2.8.
Other people like it but mine wasn't sharp at all, in most ranges. I ocassionally got a good image, though I simply assumed that I got a dud.

works fine for me. now I sure when i move up to a better mid-zoom I will think it much better, but I have had nice results with mine.

I like the 50mm but found it to be a pain in the ass sometimes for all around use. In a gaming sense, it's a fun lens to use but running all over the place to get good crops doesn't work if you like to take candids and the moments are fleeting.
When I use the 50mm I have to be more on my feet, super alert and quick to move wherever the shot is...

I love mine...I think it's great...I miss it though, it's at Nikon getting fixed because it took a spill out of my bag onto bricks.

It's a decent lens but has some flaws. Good enough for the money.
What I like:
- AFS ->speed and manual focus in AF mode
- Size and weight
- acceptable image quality 'wide'-open
- good image quality stopped down
What I don't like:
- too much distortion at 18mm
- too slow aperture
- too much vignetting
I will keep it for allround use. But I'll get a 35-70D f/2.8 for portraiture/midrange use and a yet to be decided ultrawide for the 18mm and below range. Already have a 30 f/1.4 and a 50 f/1.4 for really low light stuff.

I had some major barreling issues with cityscapes that broke the camels back. The building lines that curved in made things impossible to present and appear level.
