My wife had someone on myspace wanting to pay to use one of my images on a CD cover. I am not sure what to charge on this. It is likely a small band with little money so too high a price will probably scare them away. On the other hand the particular image they want is one of my personal favorites and I don't know if I want it associated with some crappy local/startup band. I definitely do not want to give it away for like $50 or anything (this is probably what this person thinks they will get it for). I am thinking more in the range of $300 to $500. In reality that is a common royalty free image price range for a print resolution image. Any opinions?

Here is the image they want:

It all depends how they want it. If they wanna use it on their CD cover, then they will want complete rights over the image forever, because they will most definitely use it for other promotional stuff too. Try and get an estimate of how many CDs they will be producing, the how much they are going to make. I personally think $500 is not enough. I mean they probably spent a lot more than that on music equipment, so they should be able to pay for something which will represent their music (like a CD cover).

Depending on the numbers, you might try looking at getting a royalty based on how many they actually sell.... Not sure that's practicle, just a thought.

You may also want to consider getting them to send you a copy of the CD just to make sure you want the image associated with the music.

Do a sales job - tell them you'll give them the rights for the CD cover, posters, web use, etc and in return you want credit on the CD for cover art, and $500.

Yes, they probably spent lots on their music equipment but they can go to one of the micro stocks and pay $150 to sign up - there you'd get 20 cents for the same image.

Don't be greedy. if they make it big, and they might, or they go one as individuals to other bands (almost a certainty) then you may get future sales. $500 is a nice price - it'd buy lots of fun photography stuff!
