It should be obvious to everyone that assuming you wanted to be a pro fashion photographer, it would be necessary, required even, that you become skilled at the lighting and shooting of fashion models; ditto for ANY sort of photography ΓΆ€” product photography, architectural photography, whatever. They all have their particular challenges that must be overcome, and you can't do ANY of them at a professional level by taking mediocre photographs and somehow magically transforming them in photoshop.
The base image always comes first, and if it's not a good image in its own right you are doomed. So I see NO Inconsistency in doing a "fashion" challenge in basic editing. In fact, I don't see any inconsistency in doing ANY of the challenges we have had in basic editing, with the notable exception of "Tribute", where in order to emulate certain photographers' styles you had to emulate their post-processing as well; and in that one the powers-that-be kindly agreed to make the challenge advanced editing, which was a real boon.

I reckon you get better, more professional shots than you posted to be fair. Sorry. Just my opinion. |
Well, considering I did use the word learn it makes sense that I hope to get better :-)
But that does not address the fact that not all talented professionals use photoshop which it seems, that this thread is implying.
I look forward to your fashion shots alex, you have shown your quality to date :-)

Of course lighting, composition, exposure, and all other things that make up the base image are important...however the ability to remove even minor blemishes can make the difference between a good photo and a great photo. Fashion is about presenting an idealized image. It is not impossible to acheive this without photoshop, but it isn't easy. It generally requires very good makeup, absolutely perfect lighting, and doesn't hurt to have a nearly flawless model. I did read an article several months ago in Popular photography about one of the playboy photographers. It said that he rarely used airbrushing on the centerfold images. that being said though, he also had a crew of assitants and many hours of setup and planning for a single shot...not to mention setups that have like 18 light sources in them. In reality it doesn't really bother me that much that it is basic...the only thing I will really miss are the healing brush and ability to dodge and burn. |

I think you hit it exactly here.
Nobody said it was easy or even preferable. However, by making the fashion challenge more difficult by making people shoot with all the consideration for light, model/subject and general composition it makes the challenge even more of a learning experience.
I mean, everyone has a week to get only one shot, certainly that can be done even at DPC without photoshopping :-D

I also agree that it should be with advanced editing, in fashion portraits (I would say) probably 98% of the amazing photos had to clone some minor things out or dodge/burn ...but at the same time keeping it in basic editing will be more challenging
edit* maybe "Fashion II" will be advanced editing ;)

This thread is exactly what was predicted when "Tribute" was upgraded to Advanced. The danger and warnings have come to pass.
We have to maintain Basic/Open and Advanced/Members as a balance - as has finally been agreed in the Rules thread.
Hopefully, people will forget and we will return to normality and these "... you have to make this Advanced..." threads will die

I'd kinda like to see fashion photography with real people instead of flawless models... Use your skills and abilities to make real people look good - now *there's* a challenge. :-)

It is a challenge but not a fashion one. There are standarts to fashion photography, I mean you could just use real normal people without too much editing if it sells of course.
But I have to agree that you shouldn't change the challenge, it was kind of a wrong decision. Hopefully, like Justin said, Fashion II will be advance editing. |

Who says ya need a model? Clothes, shoes, etc. Hell...easier to make a hand look perfect, than a face.

I agree with this on a "moral" level, but fashion photography isn't about real people for the most part. Although, with advanced editing, you can make anybody flawless. ROFL
I'm out on this one. Good luck to everyone who enters. |

Alas, I fear all my outside of the box ideas are not just out of the box, but off the ledge... and not all that well executed anyway. I'm resigned to the fact fashion photography will never be my thing. So do I join the huddled masses over in Duotone or sit this one out? (And whatever would I do with the update button if I've nothing in a challenge??)
And as an "oh by the way" I think the Dove commercials on TV that use "normal" people are very effective. I often find "models" very emaciated-looking and their expressions those of either arrogance or disdain. But that's probably just me. I'm severely fashion-challenged. :-) |

It was a challenge without advanced editing, but I got something I am proud of. May the challenge begin :) |

I'm in. Fashion isn't all about clothes. Its about jewelry, hairstyles, glasses, makeup & accessories. I really wish this had been advanced editing though. But I think there will be some good entries even in basic. |

I shot mine today, and I had no problems what so ever making it look like it was from a magazine. I just took alot of time prepping the model to look perfect and having the lighting be perfect just as well. I had hardly any editing done to mine.
While advanced editing would be fun, I don't think it's needed.
and on a side note.... having all this confidence in my image.... I am expecting to be in the 5's. LMAO! |
