Interesting article on how email flame wars get started: //www.wired.com/news/technology/0,70179-0.html?tw=wn_index_2
I suspect this also applies to forums (e.g. BBS, Usenet, DPC Community). |

| Great, thanks a lot. What if people start giving other people the benefit of the doubt instead of taking immediate offense? THEN what are we going to do all day? Work???? |

you're talking rubbish. You obviously have no idea about the internet.
This is how flame wars start //www.youarealoser.com

bogus testing method. The test subjects emailed canned pre-prepared statements to each other. They were just sending someone else's words around the internet -- a lot can be said for saying things in a person's own words.
I don't disagree with the analysis -- but I would not be the least bit suprised to find the percentages way off.

The trouble is people have not met face to face and therefore have no background info that helps one to interpret tone and therefore meaning. So much real conversation takes place with body language and if one cannot imagine the person speaking it is easy to misunderstand. When my husband and I text each other or speak via email, I know exactly how he would say the words if we were face to face but a stranger could say the same thing and I have nothing to gauge their sincerity or mood by.
So I think giving someone the benefit of the doubt would be helpful to avoid flamewars, and one loses nothing by doing so except a bad situation that can esculate.
Just my 2pence worth!
