I've been wanting to set up my own webpage but don't really know where to start so I hope some of you can help me out ;) MK was helping me out before but I kinda dropped the ball so i'm trying to revive this issue (this was my Christmas Wishlist as per mavrik's OP).

Here are a few things that I would like to have and correct me if I'm wrong.
- Use my own templates (in as much as i don't understand domains and web hosting stuff, i am quite literate in dreamweaver)
- E-commerce capability. How does this work? If I would like to sell some photos, etc.
- Feedback Forum
- Email capabilties
- Storage... 3-5 Gigs? (if I keep everything 640x480 how much do I really need?)
- Blog? Is this even advisable?
- Domain locking (i don't want people hacking in and making changes)

Anything else I'm forgetting? Thanks in advance guys. A few of you here have your own domains and maybe you can share your thoughts.

That sounds like work. You could just get a domain name & forward it to a Smugmug account.

At GoDaddy you get free email with a domain $10 per year.

I have several domains & forward them off to different places. All the emails forward to my gmail account.

But I'm lazy. In fact, I think I need a nap after typing this.

Rikki - try starting with PhotoReflect.com. You'll get gallery space, e-comm site and some decent layout capability. Later on you can link the e-comm portion to another website when you get one built.

I'm even lazier... Ditto what Strikeslip said.

Mostly in order, you need to do the following:

a) Completely list web site features you want to have on the site
b) Completely list technologies that will enable features in a)
c) Choose a domain name
d) Find a hosting provider (e.g. godaddy.com, hostway.com, discountasp.com, etc.), setup hosting and register the domain name
e) Purchase/obtain the desired development tool (e.g. Dreamweaver, Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.)
f) Create a new Web Site in your development tool, starting with "wireframe" pages which merely exercise the navigation
g) Develop site mockups in a graphical painter such as Flash, Illustrator,or Photoshop
h) Import site images and other files into web site with chosen layout/template
i) Setup a new forum with your hosting provider's forum capabilities or download a free forum generation software appropriate for your chosen technology (php, ASP, etc.). Don't code this yourself, it's been developed better by someone else.
j) Setup e-commerce with your hosting provider. They may have services for setting up a "merchant account" for you, which is what you need to take online credit card payments through payment services software like Payflow Pro and others. Again, don't worry about coding this yourself...pick a hosting provider that does this for you.
k) Setup a blog. Again, don't code yourself. If you have to, just link from your site to blogger.com or similar. Just don't do it yourself, too many good solutions with great features.

I'm almost as lazy but also particular. I'd suggest looking into a host that has Fantastico, which is basically a bunch of click-to-install scripts that will set up shopping carts, forums, blogs, etc. I use Verve Hosting and they have Fantastico as well as excellent customer service. This way, you don't really have to know a lot, but you have more freedom than you would by just forwarding your url to smugmug, etc.

PM me if you want help. Until then, I'll be sitting dejected in the corner.

In my country, all those things are not that expensive. Maybe I think Rupees 40000.oo per year or so. In dollars, roughly US$700 per year. Everything will be your's. Server, control of everything.

That is just a rough idea. I am a web designer myself, and I know a decent website package here comes for about US$80 a year ;)

OSCOMMERCE or Interchange for the E-Commerce portion Oscommerce is easier)

phpBB for the forum

You're hosting provider will supply the email to your domain.

The more space the better!

Hope this helps in some small way. If I can help pleasse let me know!
