| How many people do you suppose a restaurant serves per day? Is it in the hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands? You gotta think it'd add up quick with a steady flow of people all day... |

Just so you know, when you are being served in a restaurant, you are no longer consider a "person". You are called a "cover" and if you dine in a group, your group is called a "table".
I have worked in more restaurants than I care to think about; and the number of covers per day varies drastically, as does the tip average. In a busy Kosher restaurant I might have served 50 to 75 covers per shift and earned about $75 to $100 because the check average was only about $6.00 per person. Multiply that by 8 servers and two shifts and the restaurant turned about 1000 or so covers per day.
In contrast, I worked in an exclusive, gourmet restaurant where I sometimes only had 6 covers per shift and made the same $75 to $100 (or more)!

i live in a county of 30,000 people.
walmart is the only place you can buy most things - eletronics, office supplies, baby supplies etc
Our walmart charted about 10,000 customers a day around this time last year.
What has this to do with resturants? It is all about supply and demand. I am willing to wager that in a county twise as large, a walmart sitting next to a kmart and a home depot and an office max will not see a third of it's county every day, as our store does.
So any resturant, anywhere it would be impossible to judge how many customers it serves. Food type, service, supply and demand etc would all need to come into consideration. |

The origin of the "table" category is obvious, but where does "cover" come from?? Interesting! |

If I had to guess, I'd say it has to do with people having to pay a cover charge to get into a place. Bars use it too. |
