readying my first photos for DCPrints, and after getting them all ready to go, went to save as a .jpeg of course and up came the standard quality control thing... i saved at the highest quality level which made my photo for an 8x12 about 4.5 megs! Is this ok? What do most of you during this stage of saving?

I think the max on MB's is 13 on your uploadable printable, so you are safe. ALWAYS save at the highest quality for your printable. the thumbnail/preview I have gone down to 75 (in the PS Save for Web option), and have no pixellation, etc. Still looks good

When submitting the photo for approval which size do I submit? The whole submission thing confuses me! I need to talk to someone one on one about this whole thing... anyone out there willing?

you first upload your preview/thumbnail to your portfolio. Click it and add all the info you like (always do the keywords and a description). then down below that you will see the submit printable button/link. Then choose your photo off the hard drive. It then uploads it. When it is done, it will say you have uploaded a printable picture (same area as the upload was), Click the link for that. Will then go to a new page and show you the sizes that it qualifys for in the certain aspect ratio. (1.25:1, 1.5:1, etc.). Click the button to have it reviewed. Come back tomorrow sometime and go back to your portfoilio and open the pic again. If it has been approved (on the page that you enter keywords, etc.) it will say so in big red letters. Click the begin to sell link. New page and put in the prices you want and update. TaaDaa! Then hope it sells Good Luck

OK, now how large do I want the printable picture to be?

as big as possible. The main thing you want to make sure of is your dpi. I always do mine at 300 dpi. Most of the photos I have been uploading lately are about 8x6.4 (1.25:1 aspect ratio) That is how they are coming out when I crop them and I easily get the 8x10's without quality loss. I have upsized some others also though. You can always make them match the ratios, ie: 8x10, 4x5, 8x12, etc. But the dpi is most important.
Check out the tutorials. These will walk you through it and answer alot of questions
