My guess if very few of you.

I was a firefighter / first responder for 3 years -- I've seen it all.
Ever seen a severed femoral artery? How about a severed femoral artery from a pregnant lady in a car from her steering wheel?
Ever seen a man in his driveway still partially alive after getting half of his entire body cut off from a boat that feel off the hitch in his driveway?
Ever been the first medical person on the scene in a situation like those? I have...you're right, it's not pretty...but I do enjoy watching videos like that...not sure why, but I do.
-----
EDIT:
I rode sportbikes for years...I've seen it all...
My best friend was right next to me when a Grand Cherokee pulled out infront of us the wrong way from a one-way street (why he didn't have a stop sign going onto a main roadway). We were going 50 mph...I saw him coming, my buddy didn't. He lowsided, became one with the undercarriage of the Jeep, lost half his shoulder, and continued to tumble and flip like a rag doll until he came to an abrupt rest into a telephone pole. (That wasn't the worst of it, the worst was watching him try to get up and walk, he was literally like a bleeding zombie).
Another time, going about 120mph down the highway, the guy a couple bikes up is doing a high chair wheelie (where you put your legs infront of the grips) and as he's coming back to normal position after the wheelie, he taps the front brake with his calf...went right over the bike. The guy right behind him drives directly INTO his tumbling body and the bike pretty much EXPLODES into oblivian...it was an ugly ugly thing.

You know what did it for me, I was a volunteer firefighter for about a year, and we got a call about a Semi-truck car crash, I had seen a few of them before, so out we go. It was quite foggy that morning, I could just make out a squad car lights as we stopped on scene. What happened was the Semi had pulled out acrossed a lane of the highway, and stalled(blew the driveshaft) This happened right next to river valley and the fog was really think. Several vehicles had crashed into the trailer one going under it an came out the other side. Well I came upon the truck that went under. I reconized it was a Mazda B2000, I had scene it before, the paint job, the guy lived in my apartment building. I never talked to the guy, but had seen him and his GF or Wife at the pool, with their kids. Well as I came up to the driver side, The roof was ripped clean off, the fact the truck was lowered and converted to a hard top convertable didn't help. But what hit me with the surprise left, was in the pass seat was a baby seat, body still in it head laying in the bed. That kinda ruinned me on the firefighting career, its an image that just haunts me still.

David, no offense intended but your only 24 years old! Three years in EMS? Come on. My father was a cop for 30 years, my bother was a cop for 30 years, my nephew is a cop now in NY city, I was a firefighter for 30 years.
Believe me, you have not seen it all.

I said 3 years as a firefighter / first responder...and I gave examples to some of the stuff that I've seen. I was making a general statement to the other poster who assumed I had seen nothing. I know I said i've seen it all, but it was meant as a general statement that I have seen more than what I was being given credit for.
Personally, and I'm not sure why you directed your statement to me, but I don't care if you or your father or your father's father was a firefighter or a police officer for 30 years or 300 years -- I never once stated that I cared what anyone saw or what anyone has been through...direct your statement to the original person that questioned what others have seen...because, like I said, I never asked about that, nor do I care.

Relax - the problem with threads on the internet is that there is no body language. You only get part of the message. I guess my point was that you are young. That is not bad nor is it good. It just means that you have limited experience. Yes, you have seen much for your age but I would bet that when you are 50 or 60 you will look at life with a little more compassion and a little less demand for perfection. I was once you. Time and experience tended to make me more mellow and realize that there is always much more to the story.
And yes, I realize it is not you that has been the most abrasive one on this thread. But some are not worth the breath (or in this case the manual dexterity).

oh...lol I guess you were the original person that questioned what we have seen...didn't realize that until I went back to quote.
Anyway...that being said...
You're right, I am young, and I have probably seen very little compared to some people...but I never claimed to have seen more than anyone anywhere, in any internet forum, in any community, in any nation, in any world, in any universe...I claimed what I saw, and I said it in response to your accusation that very few of us have seen, in person, anything that resembles what happened in the video.
Oh well...take it easy.

I really don't think DPC is the place to post such videos. |
I agree. I'm done. |
Yup, and I also said the above. Should have listened to myself and not particiapted further in this as it is useless. For those who are reading and tend to the rigid side of this discussion I hope you find a little more compassion in your life. It will make you a happier person.
The end.

I read all the replies to this, but I still don̢۪t understand how so many people feel its ok for the police to NOT stop the bad guys. you would rather the police not give chase to stop the bad guys (or minor traffic violator) so they can get away and do it again, and again and again.
Criminals have no respect for the rest of us and they will still drive crazy even after the police stop pursuit and let the bad guy go.
crime is bad enough as it is, and by letting all the criminals know they have a good chance of not getting arrested if they just drive like mad to get away the cops will quit following. This is NOT the message we need to be sending to the criminal types.
Enforcement needs to get tougher, if a few innocents are lost doing so, it̢۪s something we will have to live with until the crime rates severely drop. If the bad guy or the person fleeing the police is killed during a chase, so what, that̢۪s just one less mouth my tax dollars have to pay to feed.
I̢۪m sure you will ask me how I would feel if a family member or loved one was an innocent by stander killed by a chase. My answer is I would be sad at the loss, now why the loss happened. I would hold the criminal or person fleeing from the police responsible, not the police.
I have never run from the cops and never will. I have done tons of dumb and stupid things in my life, but running from the law is not one of them. I have spent more time in the back of a cruiser than I care to (only 1 time) in my life.
I guess the rest of you don̢۪t mind living in an environment full of crime. I absolutely hate it.
Why do I need a home security system, why do I need a car alarm, why are my insurance rates higher, why are products I buy costing me more, because of crime, it affects everyone and everyting you buy.

But not everyone who runs is a "criminal" in the sense you're discussing. Not even most of them, possibly.

I think it's pretty simple.
We have a justice system philosophically based upon the fact that it's better to let a guilty person go than punish one of the innocent. That is why our legal system has so many legal options for challenging guilt, and why we are "innocent until proven guilty".
Police officers don't open fire on criminals in crowded areas. Police officers don't open fire on criminals holding a hostage. The priority is to Protect the lives the criminals are placing in danger -- the criminals can be caught later, but the killed bystander can't be brought back to life.
A police officer turns on his sirens because he caught someone speeding, and that person takes off. What is the priority here?
The criminal can be caught later - the innocent person killed during a chase can Not be brought back to life. |
