Hi all

I was wondering what the concensus on cropping pictures was.
I personally like to keep my shooting aspect ration when I crop. (so I would keep my 2x3 ration and crop that way.

I noticed that lot of people don't keep this aspect ration and just crop as it may come. This makes for often a way better composition, but if you were to want to print that picture, then you have a problem. Specially if you want to frame it.

Just wondering what people thought of cropping and sticking or not to aspect rations

Thanks

Javier

2x3 ratio is actually not very easy to find precut mattes for or a propper frame.

8 x 10 is one of the most common sizes but that's a 2 x 2.5 ratio.

I usually crop based on the image and what looks best, not based on what's readily available for diy framing.

BTW, it's ratio not ration. ;o)

Trying to capture images and information that neatly fits into standard aspect sizes isn't easy and shouldn't be a constriction in my mind. Round pegs don't fit into square holes so why force things if it's not necessary to do so...unless printing or standard crops apply to the final product such as, headshots.

You can always print a picture with white space on normal print sizes and mat to the size of your shot getting the composition you want. At least that's what I do...

If it just happens to fit, I will move an extra pixel here or there to hit a standard size.

Aside from that, I never let the frame dictate the crop. I rarely use standard frames.
