First I want to say THANK YOU for all the comments, good and bad. 51 is the 2nd highest number of comments I have received. I wish I could have picked a better spot in the play to place the filter, but my copy of Romeo and Juliet is very very old, yellowed, and torn. Its a copy handed down through my family, we are all literary geeks. I wanted to use this particular copy because of its importance to me, even though I had to pick an unknown spot in the play.

I would like to address some issues I have with my comments and what I feel is a double standard. I was very disappointed that so many of you thought this was a bad shot just because it has been done before. I had several comments with links to the "famous heart" image that inspired my image and links to the tutorial. Is not the point of a tutorial to teach? So then why am I being downgraded for trying my hand at it? Why is it ok for there to be hundreds of water bubble shots or water drop shots or many of the other types of shots that are duplicated time and time again on this site, yet I get flack for this one? I really find that very unfair.

Also.. I might have overprocessed this.. but I was trying to go for a certain look here, to make the heart and text at the bottom stand out by overexposing the top of the image and creating a blurry look to the image. This was intentional. Here is what I was originally going to submit versus what I did submit.

Which do you like better?

<-- original

<-- submitted

Again, Thanks for all the wonderful comments and for the high placing

Any time anyone reprises a "famous" DPC image, they will get that sort of comment; it's very predictable. You finished top 20, so clearly the negative effect was not very pronounced. Regarding your question, IMO the entered version is head-and-shoulders better than the harsher original.

I don't let comments worry me anymore everyone is entitled to their opinion. I also got a told my shot had been done before and linked back to another.....trouble was the other was mine.

I don't vote rock bottom on photos that are technically good, but originality and creativity are very important to me, and my scoring reflects that. It's certainly not wrong to learn how to do a specific, well-known shot, but I don't know if it's ideal to submit it to a challenge, particularly without applying a really substantial twist. The photo you emulated is a much more striking and memorable shot than generic bubbles. Many commenters, and maybe many voters, perceived the photo as wholly your own idea. Potentially your title could have hinted at crediting the originator (e.g. after so&so, blahblah revisited).
Just my 2c.

Your image must be good. I caught myself waxing poetic lines from Shakespeare when I saw it. LOL!

You are OK. The purpose here is to try new things and learn to be a better photographer. Never feel bad about trying things out. Just expect that a vocal minority might say things. Take it in stride. Expect more of the same when you try the water drop technique made famous by jmsetzler's "Liberty and Justice" image. LOL!

If there is any suggestion I would make it would be to use a narrower aperture to increase DOF so the whole filter is sharply focused... but then, that might just be me.

A score over 6 on any image of something done here before is very good. Be pleased with that. Konador's is one of the most famous DPC images and everyone is aware of it. You could select worse images to try and duplicate... like any of mine, for example. :)
