I've just bought a Canon 300D with the kit lens, and am looking for good lenses that won't completely and utterly break my bank account. Anyone care to share some of their favorite lenses?
I knew this was an expensive hobby, why couldn't I have taken up...say...rock collecting? |

I see you already have the kit lens. Just stick to that for now and learn how to use your equipment. Once you are comfortable with it you will know what else you want in terms of lenses. |

Could be worse, you could be like Slippy, he's got both hobbies :-)
Are you looking for something to compliment the range of the kit lens, or...? Prime or zoom? What's your realistic budget?
Off the top, I would strongly suggest, the very inexpensive and darn good 50/1.8, it's less than $100 and you'll have a low-light lens that can really show you what the camera can do. Sure it's a single focal length, and the build quality is so-so, but it's also compact, light, sharp, fast and cheap. Hard combination to beat.

The 75-300 that esdarby mentioned is a decent lens, and you can find some varient of it (Canon made a few models of it) on eBay. I got mine there for about $140ish. Although I find that I don't use it as much as I thought I would.
I second what kirbic said. The 50mm F1.8 is a fine, fine little lens, and well worth every cent. Not L-glass, but mine takes great images and I'm very happy with it. And best of all, it's cheap ;)

My realistic budget is as low as possible, really. I'd say not more than $250, and I know that'll be hard to do for a good lens. Ebay does help though, of course.
I'm looking for a zoom lens--my old camera, had a 6x optical zoom--I realize that this would get pricey in a lens, but I was used to the sharpness and the clarity of the zoom, you know? The kit lens is such a small zoom for me. |

If you are looking for a good zoom below $250, then consider the Sigma 70-300mm APO Macro II DG. Great lens for the dollar.

Canon 50mm f/1.8. This is an awesome lens for the price (under 100 bucks) Very sharp, very fast. Put it on your camera and don't take it off for a month. You will take out one element of learning your new camera, the focal range and zooming. You will have a new element of photography to play with on an almost exagerated level. You can play around with shooting the same things with different appertures to see what you can REALLY do with DOF. My two cents worth... |

The sigma 70-300 APO (must be the apo version) is an excellent lens for the money, can be had for under $150 on ebay used. The DG version is slightly newer and better, but not enough to worry about.
the canon 50 1.8 is a good little versatile lens.
Everything is a compromise. The more zoom range you get in a lens the more distortion you will find at either end. So try and avoid the 18-200 and 28-300 lenses.
Tamron's SP line of lenses, Sigma's EX line, Tokina's Pro line are all good, some very very good, and all are less expensive than the canon L glass equivalents.
The best all around lens is probably the Tamron SP 24-135 3.5-5.6 macro. Outstanding lens. about $400 and worth every penny. Great for walk around, studio use, macro. If you sell the kit lens and add in your $250 this would be a doable lens.
