With all this I decided to clean the few dust bunnies off that I've been noticing. The blower has worked everytime before but what the heck. The sensor cleaning fluid as listed a soft paddle as described, softly as described .. hummm go take a pic of the blue sky with f-20-f-32 and what the heck, two dark streaks almost clear across the pic. Go back with great care (guess NOT) try again. Still there, several times more still there. I can see them on the sensor....yup looks like a scratch since I can visibly see it. BE VERY CAREFUL. I'm a pretty good fix-it-up guy with almost everything. looks like a new sensor now ... OUCH. Be very very careful. If the blower works try it first. |
If they are scratches, you should be able to see them on the sensor with the naked eye.
Try making up a smaller pad/swab (I assume pec*pads?) and wipe it at right angles to the 'scratches'.
Do the sky/F22 test again and see if your scratches are in fact smears..
I'd be supprised if you've managed to get two scratches on the sensor on your first attempt, that's either really bad luck, or you live in a dust-bowl.
Cheers, Me. |
Yup I can definately see them with the naked eye. The blue sky pic at f/4 - f/8 they are not visible. When up at f/20 or even /32 they are well defined hard lines. I would hope it would smear but it doesn't look like it will.
So my friends, how much does a new sensor for a 20D cost? Does anyone need a kidney, left arm or a choice of eyes to pay for it ;) |

OM Gosh I got my kit on Friday and finally plucked up the courage to try it today. Wow nerve racking, there are three spots that just wont budge though and after 10 attempts I called it quits, sure is a whole lot better than it was and I am sure those stubborn ones will eventually come off with regular cleaning (or I hope so)

Yeowch! I don't think I'll be cleaning my sensor any time in the near future. Sorry to hear about that, but hope you get the camera back soon! Just think, though, at least it will be a brand new pristine sensor! |

I actually expected it to be much more expensive than that.
I work at a company that makes surgical video cameras. We use all sorts of CCD's, but the ones closest to what is in digital cameras are ones we get from Kodak and depending on the sensor, they run $670 to over $1K for just the sensor. None of them are 8+ megapixel either.
I'm sure Canon uses a lot more Sony sensors than we do and thus gets better prices and ours may have some things specific to surgery or microscope use, but still I thought it would run you $500+. |
