In the forums there are two buttons very close to together - "Report Post" and "quote".

The "Report Post" button is used to report misbehavior and the "quote" button is used to add a forum message to your reply. These are completely different functions but the screens displayed when clicked are remarkably similar. The later is the most used.

I just sent a very detailed reply to a forum post that was reported as a misbehavior. I suspect this has been done many, many times before.

My suggestion is this:
Before a misbehavior report is sent that you send a simple dialog box asking if "Do you really want to report this as a misbehavior?" be added before it is recorded. If the answer is "no" then assume it is a "quote" button click and go to the "quote" button screen with the message intact.

I suspect that most of the time that messages recieved as "report post" messages, like mine, that do not make any sense whatsoever are really intended to be "quote" button posts.

This will allow recoverability.

I was gonna reply to you but just accidently reported your post.

Seriously, the same thing has happened to me. The buttons should be further apart, or there should be some obvious reminder with the "report post" screen that sets it apart from the reply process.

A couple clues - the report post box is a pop-up, the quote box is not. If you hit quote, you should SEE the quote - if you hit report post, you do not.

Incidentally, if you ever accidentally report a post that you meant to just post and it's not something you can recreate, shoot us a PM and we can drag it out for you.
