I r noob and need some help on choosing a lens. I have a d50 and my budget is about $350. I would like something in the 200mm-300mm range with good sharpness. Thanks

the tamron 70-300 is a pretty good starter lens. it's got a slow focus, but works reasonably well outside. i've heard that the nikon 70-300 is similar and not worth the extra $$. that's the rumor, anyway.

I have a similar choice to make for my D50. Despite a decent collection of Nikon lenses, I need one lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths for everyday use. The best candidates appear to be the Tamron 28-300mm XR Di or the Tamron 18-200mm XR Di II. Anyone have experience with either of these lenses?

The problem you're going to run into is doing anything where you need a wide aperture. $350 is going to limit you to the f/3.5-5.6 range. I'm not sure what kind of pictures you're wanting to take but you will be limited by a lens in that budget range. If you double that price you can get a Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO IF HSM. B&H lists it for $749 and you'll get excellent pics in low light situations. I have been experiencing problems shooting indoor sporting events where flashes are not allowed. The f/3.5 and above require such slow shutter speeds I just can't capture anything worth viewing. The drawback to all of this is the price. I've started to sell off things like my kit lenses so I can start purchasing higher end lenses like that Sigma. Hope this helps.

I̢۪m pretty happy with my Nikon 70-300 f/4-5.6D and right in your budget limit. I should agree with pix-are with aperture limit, but if you use tripod or monopod you can take really good sharp picture.

This one I made from a distance with 70-300

The sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO super Macro is the best value in the 200-300 range - about $200 and very sharp all the way out. Make sure it's the APO version.
The next step up is going to be very costly - you can do a 70-200 2.8 and a 1.4x teleconverter to get an effective f4 100-300.

What specifically are you looking to shoot? sports, wildlife or ??

The 28-300 lenses are for film cameras - the 18-200 class are for the APS sized digicams. None of these are going to be all that high in image quality they are 10:1 zooms, and to get that range you have to give up something - it's all a compromise.

Speed - optic quality - low price
- pick any two.

Yeah, I plan on doing sports and wildlife photos. I have looked at the sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO super Macro and Nikon 70-300 f/4-5.6D and was considering either of them.

Go Steelers!

Assuming other than outdoor daylight sports, the 70-200 2.8 type of lens is the #1 most popular, hands down.
Second choice for that is a 300mm fast prime, or perhaps an 85mm 1.8 for indorr work. Some depends on the sport.

For wildlife a good value is the sigma 50-500. Not fast enough for indoor sports, but lots of length for wildlife.

If you wanna play, you gotta pay...
