How do you guys keep up with the breaking events? Todays paper (a weekly) reports on a large moorland fire (large to us inthe UK, like 2square KM, not the sort of thousand acre fires elsewhere in the world)

but I didn't hear about it until after the event, the local daily news didn't even mention it.

Bearing in mind I'm in rural cornwall, where there isn't exactly a thriving amateur news/blogging community, what could I do to keep an ear to the ground? How do you guys do it, do you have contacts in the emergency forces? Radio scanners?
