So because this shot was a panoramic, I must have originally intended it to be rectangular and henceforth screwed it up. |

Why this doesn't make sense (blindly requiring that shots be 4:3) is that it entirely depends on your subject. I think that detail will be very critical in this challenge, so it's going to be best to get as much of your final image in the frame as possible. But if your subject calls for a square or panoramic framing, it seems pretty much impossible to achieve that without cropping. (I suppose, hopefully only on two sides.)
And, suppose someone takes a wonderful shot with a 2MP camera that calls for a square frame, and they just crop off the left and right, but other than that it was perfectly framed. And someone with a 5MP camera takes a shot that they heavily crop on all sides, but still maintain a 4:3 ratio. The resulting submissions may have similar quality of detail, and by your criteria, you would vote higher (assuming all else was equal) on the heavily cropped photo than on the more "true to the challenge" photo.
Just something to consider when the time comes to vote... |
