Color me disappointed. "Best-of-2005", 829 entries, 746 views, 454 votes.

Not even as many views as there are entrants, and not many more than half as many votes as entries.

Welcome to the world of "take without giving". Even allowing for a certain percentage of entrants being on dialup, this is ridiculous IMO. I had voted on all the entries within a couple days of posting, and have been refining ever since. We've had TWO WEEKS to get this done. Pffffft!

You got one more vote than me, but I bet that your score is a lot higher than mine.

I don't vote on challenges I enter.
01/31/2006 11:27:39 PM · #7
I here what you're saying Bear.

I voted on all 829 entries ... my entry has only 564 views and 447 votes. I would have expected at least 600 to 700 votes. I hope the same won't happen for the Free Study X challenge!!!

My score's ok, I'm not complaining about that. I just don't understand how so many people can enter and then fail to complete the voting.

1000+ entries (all challenges combined) is a lot to get through for people who have jobs and are otherwise engaged.
01/31/2006 11:30:13 PM · #10
Even though I did the unthinkable...I voted on all and adjusted numerous times.
01/31/2006 11:30:26 PM · #11
If I get through one regular contest a week, I am doing pretty good. I voted enough to make my vote count in best of 2005. But not all.

So little time, so many contests.

speaking of Best Of....any word on how long the site is going to be down for rollover?

I was just thinking about voter burn-out since there have been so few views/votes so far in Off Center.

I didn't enter but I did vote on each and every one. I always vote on every entry if I vote a challenge. Not fair to do otherwise, in my opinion.

Perhaps the fact that they had to vote on a minimum of 20% of the entries kept some folks from voting. The fact is Robert that not all participants on this site share your sense of duty.

Personally, I believe that we have the same approach to voting, and like you I managed to complete my voting on this challenge in about a week.

I think it would be fairer not to vote on challenges you have entered. I did enter and vote on the Best of.... but with the exclusive challenges I enter one, and vote on the other.

I am sure that many of the 1,2,3 votes are pure spite - an effort to lower other scores in order to improve their own odds.

At times, when I feel I am getting unfairly low scores, I opt NOT to vote because I may not be at my fairest at such a time.

Edited to add: I realize you were talking about each entry, not necessarily each challenge, and I agree with that point entirely.

Bear, I voted 100% and didn't even have an entry in. You are correct though. The number of votes should have at least equaled the number of entrants.

I'm doin' my best. My latest push got me up to 64%, I believe. I'm at least well past the number of votes I've recieved. I always keep my total votes cast ahead of my votes recieved (same for comments) and try to do so in every challenge I enter, if I can't vote the whole thing. I wish I could make it to 100% in the next 20 minutes, but that doesn't seem too likely as I like to spend a fair amount of time with each image, really take it in & think about it. Unfortunately, my life is a bit crazy at the moment. In addition to my thesis research overload (I've got to get enough done by March that I'll have something to say on my poster for Northeastern GSA, and then have the whole shebang done by June...so much lab work...ugh), I've got exams this week and an unusually large workload for classes and it doesn't help that my department was moronic enough to run two job searches at the same time such that we've got double seminars every week. Not only is it extra time, but every talk we here is about the same thing...so boring. Hmm...somehow this has turned into a rant on my life...LOL, sorry. Back to voting!

I made it through 51%. Sorry, just don't have the time. Got a job, wife, two kids, and a home business...I'm lucky to have time to sleep.

Maybe some don't vote on challenges they have entered.
Maybe some don't vote unless they know they can vote on EVERY image.
Maybe some just don't have the time to sit and vote on hundreds & hundreds of pics.
Maybe some have dial-up and cannot be tied down that long trying to vote on them all.
Maybe This is nothing new really. LARGE challenges generally don't get as many votes as entries.
50% votes to entries is about right according to the large challenges I have entered.
01/31/2006 11:53:11 PM · #23
I was thinking the same thing, Bear. But I have 434 votes with only 560 views (and does the view couont go up each time I look at my pic to read the latest comment?).
01/31/2006 11:54:05 PM · #24
Free Study is coming in at 619 entries - here we go again...
01/31/2006 11:55:31 PM · #25
You have rated 828 of 829 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 28 images (3%) in this challenge.

I did not leave as many comments as I hoped for initially. However, I did have the time to revisit my 9s, 8s, and some 7s, and bump them according to the appeal.

I ended up scoring >150 images 8 or higher... never seen before. No 1s, 2s, or 3s, and only 7 4s.

Good job everyone!

5 more minutes...
