I have read that you shouldn't use a hood on wider angle lenses. I believe it had something to do with vingeting. At what point to they become a negative factor?

If you have vignetting with a hood on any lens, you are using the wrong hood.

sometimes you need to remove the hood when using flash, pending on how close to subject you are, it can leave a nasty shadow.

That usually means your flash is too close to the lens. Use a bracket or bounce it.

LOL

I use mine for everything. Although I've compared photos shot without it and really don't see a difference. Course it is winter and there hasn't been much sun lol.

If you are using a built in flash it is kind of hard to change the results.
