So its finally happened...
Someone has asked for me to price out and shoot a wedding for them! Only problem is, I have no idea where to even begin! Any suggestions?

I found this book to be very well written.
Great read
I would start with the style you are going to use. Photojournalistic, traditional or a little of both.

i had the same thing happen to me.. I asked alot of questions here and based my price on what i was told, my lack of experience etc.. they were very happy with the price.. I also did a google search on wedding contracts. I felt it was important even though i am not a professional. I made sure in that contract that I had someone lined up to replace me if i were sick and couldnt make it. When I started delving into it i couldnt believe the amount I hadnt thought of.. You will be fine. :)
When is the wedding? The one I am doing is in March. |

Barbara Warren, an area photographer, has a great website with photo galleries, //www.barbarawarren.com/weddings/. Her packages start at $2,000. |

I'm assuming that they know you have little experience with weddings and are on a budget. Tell them you want to create a custom package just for them, but you need some input to get started. Ask them to help you by showing you some shots that they want form wedding/bride's magazines. That way, you can get a sense of what kind of style they are looking for. Ask them if they want posed formals. Some couples are passing on those or drastically reducing the number of formal poses since they can be a major cause of stress for everyone involved. If they do want them, ask them for a list (Bride alone, Couple, Bride w her parents, couple with both sets of parents etc.) A tip for the formals, if you do them is to arrange the bride and her dress, then rotate the other people in and out so you don't have to keep fussing with her dresss, especially if it has a long train. When and where is the ceremony? the reception?
If they are serving a meal, make sure they understand they need to feed you.
Ask if there are any special guests you need to be on the lookout for, (grandmothers, special aunts etc.) and ask for someone to help you ID these folks during the ceremony. Do they want coverage before the ceremony? How about an engagement portrait? One for the announcement in the paper?
Once you get a feel for what they want, give them a fair price and stick to it. If they want to bargain, don't back down on the price, but try giving them a bigger album, an extra 8x10 etc, stuff that doesn't really cost you much to offer to them, but seems like a big deal.

There have been a few other threads in here relating to wedding photography... worth doing a search and reading them too.

Go to:
//www.aljacobs.com/
Download the PDF titled "WEDDING HAND GUIDE FOR THE BEGINNER". It's a link about 2/3rds of the way down the page..
Read and inwardly digest. :-).
Cheers, Me.
(This is my standard 'I'm going to shoot a wedding' reply now. :-) ). |
