| any advice on converting color images to black and white, specially portraits .. the skin looks kinda hazy .. not a normal shade in b n w after i convert it |

That's a good method - just remember that using adjustment layers in blending modes other than normal is not legal in basic editing.

I have Photoshop CS2 and use: Image-Adjustments-Channel mixer.
Check the Monochrome box and then play around with the sliders.
Ideally the amounts should all add up to 100.
Minus numbers and calculators are allowed.

| Sometimes I find the best starting point is to simply take either the Green or the Red Channel to a new grayscale file, and make tone (Curve) adjustments from there. |

If you shoot RAW; You have DPP since you have a 20D - I believe it can do B&W with the filters, so would be worth a look.
Does DPP come with the 350D? - I assume so but no idea. |

I just stumbled onto these channel mixer files that do a wonderful job with the conversion. IMO, channel mixer is the absolute best way to convert to B&W.

PS... don't forget to have some fun tweaking settings.
