Trying to remember if I did that.....I don't think so!

I did that once with a picture of Mandy where she not only gave unrestricted permission to modify it but she solicited it. She didn't like the change. I thought it a harmless joke, she was terribly offended. She complained and I immediately removed the offending modification. End of story.

The lesson here is that even if you have the permission of the photographer to modify their image within the simple confines of a DPC forum you still need to be careful. It is their picture and if they don't like what you do to it they have every right to complain.

You might want to rethink this stance in light of a few passages from the TOS.

These are my feelings about my images being used and changed for a laugh that is in bad taste.I don't want my pictures to be used as a joke. Someone in the past has taken a photo of me and made it look pornographic. I didn't like it at all. I had every right to get mad about it.

Get mad, possibly if you thought it inappropriate -- request a change, of course -- act out that anger in a hostile manner (as the posts here indicate), definitely not.

You gave permission, permission was acted upon, you didn't like the result -- deal with it.

But that this is just my personal feelings on a person being responsible for their own actions. *shrug*

I'd never make fun of your photography. I love almost all the shots I've seen in your portfolio. Especially how well you can take a self portrait. I have yet to take a self portrait that I've liked.

So what I am seeing here is a sort of "in the middle" response. Some say they are against any use without knowledge and some say they don't really care for the most part. Other than a few instances I guess I would have to agree with the side that has no concerns of use. In my own opinion now after reading these, I did in fact post these photos on the internet with the intent that they be enjoyed or used to learn how to or how not to. So in my case I suppose I wouldn't mind use for NON-PROIT. I would still hold the right to analyze each individual photo and it's possible use on a photo by photo basis. With this said I would like to thank everybody for their input. I appreciate your comments that have helped me come to my conclusion. This is what I love about this sight and it's members. Good healthy conversation and debate.
And please do continue this is very interesting.

My personal feeling is...If it's not yours, don't take it.

So, yes, I would like to know if someone has an interest in using my images (for any reason) and you should never use someones work for profit without getting permission. That's stealing and just plain rude. Besides, what would ever make one think it's okay to take something that doesn't belong to them and then resell it to make their own money?

If I post an image for critique, however, I don't mind if people post variations on how to improve upon it.

This is why I rarely post at 800px or larger. Most of my images online are at 640px with some at 500px. And, the important ones are watermarked. I know it's not fool proof but I'm going to at least make the idiot work to fix it.

Whoa... Butterfly nobody said anything about taking them for profit The question was using them for a NON-PROFIT reason. We all agree on the issue of profit that is hands down a no brainer. But what if someone sees your work and wants to use it to do a power point or to hang on his own wall. No profit here just personal enjoyment. What would you think about that.

I think it's a matter of respect and common courtesy. I would never take or use something that didn't belong to me without asking. I would hope people would offer the same respect to me.

As long as the person doesn't intend to use the image for some shady purpose, why not ask? Takes less effort to ask than it does to use it. And it sounds like most people wouldn't mind as long as they are asked, they might even be flattered.

As far as 'hanging on his wall', like you said a couple of posts ago, I think that would be stealing. If a person wants a print for their wall, buy a print. Don't see a print of the photo you like for sale? Contact the photog and tell them you'd like to buy one!

All a matter of common courtesy and respect. Wouldn't the world be a nice place if.....
