Maybe it was so I could look at it again later when I had more time and wouldn't have to search for it. I hope the concept isn't to difficult for you to understand. If it is, let me know and I'll try to explain it in simpler terms!!!
Orrrrrrr, maybe I should start a new thread to ask my question instead of looking through old threads. I understand that DPC just loves it when people do that.

No need to be nasty about it. Perhaps you should check out the "watched threads" feature. |

I don't want to be nasty about it but what caught me was "without posting anything of value" and my initial response was what I gave you.
I wanted to find the answer to a question that I had and was going to start a thread. Then I remembered that DPC wants you to look through old threads first so I thought that if I just throw a "bump" in there, I will be able to go into my profile and look at it when I want without having to search again for it. Then I saw your post and felt that it needed a response. I don't know anything about watched threads and I just used a feature that I know works. I didn't think it would bother anyone. |

Bumping is not a "feature" to keep a thread on your DPC home page.
What it does do push an old thread up to the top of the list, making people think that there's something new to discuss, when in fact, there is not. So, basically, you've wasted time for everyone who opened this thread, thinking there was some kind of current, relevant discussion happening.
You could have used the "watch thread" feature. Since you claim ignorance of that, you could have simply bookmarked the thread in your browser. Both of those thngs would have accomplished your goal. Neither of them would have affected anyone else.
If you have some relevant information/questions or concerns about what was discussed in a year old thread, then, by all means post them in the old thread and resurrect it. |

Would it be safe to say that everytime someone uses "bump", they've wasted time for everyone who opened this thread, thinking there was some kind of current, relevant discussion happening? Or, is it just because I dit it?

woulda been no problem if it was a thread, say, from the last evening, bumped for the morning crowd to see the interesting content. but this thread is almost a year old, most of the info in it is outdated, you just wasted my time, too.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. Just a little post holiday crankiness going on perhaps? :D
People do use a "bump" to keep a thread on the home page, but usually it's for something fairly recent, i.e. - looking for feedback/comments on some photos from a trip, etc... One or two "bumps" is certainly the norm around here.
What I wonder about is what your question is? You mention having a question and had considered starting a new thread but instead "bumped" this one (and yes, searching for prior threads is good courtesy). If this thread is relevant to your question you could have simply asked your question and in essence "bumped" the thread.
So...what IS your question? :P |

I didn't want to ask a question before I had a chance to read the thread. That's why I bumped it. So I could look at it later. I just didn't think that putting a bump in there would cause this much trouble. Usually, when I ask a question pertaining to an outdated thread. People just ignore it when they see how old it is. I would probably get more relevant responses if I just started a new thread but I thought I was doing the right thing. My question is: I have PSP9 and can't open Nikon RAW files(NEF). Is there anyone using PSP9 that has problems opening RAW files and how do they solve the problem? If they use other software to open it and then transfer it to PSP, is the file degraded in the transfer process? |

It has nothing to do with you personally.
If the thread is a couple days old and there was a query that never got addressed, then maybe bumping is OK, as a way to stimulate discussion.
But, generally, yes, using "bump" is wasting everyone's time. Bumping, in effect is saying "Hey everyone! Look here!"
What you wanted to do (based on your earlier comments) was mark the discussion so you could look at it later and there are better ways to do that.

Had you posted this instead of your "bump", then that would have been perfectly fine. You could have marked the thread for reading at your leisure, then posted your question, which would have not gone into a discussion of annoying forum habits.
Can you use the Nikon software to convert to the file format of your choice for use in PSP9? Or maybe Breezebrowser or Capture One? All will do it, none will change the original RAW file. The difference will be in the output, not the RAW file. |
