At the moment, when I've finished shooting and want to put my camara back in it's bag, I switch to manual focus, put the focus back to infinity, and then switch back to Auto focus to keep it in place.
Would there be a problem with putting it back in auto focus? Just interested in how others do this.
Maybe you put the lens cap on and half=press the shutter to let the camara put the focus back to infinity?

Shouldn't be a problem. As long as the camera is off before you switch it back to autofocus, it will lock on whatever distance the lens is currently focused at.

Sorry what I meant is, is it ok to manually put the lens back to infinity while it is in autofocus (with it switched off) just want to make sure I'm not wasting time but switching to manual focus and back to auto again every time.

With Canon's USM lenses, which use ring autofocus, you can spin the manual focus when AF is on and the camera is powered up without any problems whatsoever. With my Tamron 28-75mm XR-DI, if I try to do the same thing it feels "gritty", not as smooth as it does in MF mode. But I don't have any NEED to do this; none of my lenses "extend" when they are focusing close, not even my 60mm Canon macro lens.

I assume you have a lens that physically extends when you pull focus closer? Else why would you bother? My advice would be, if you can FEEL a difference, don't do it. If there's no difference in feel, don't worry about it, bring the extension back in with camera in MF mode. Just to be safe...

I am sure someone (kirbic?) knows more about this than me. But I hate with a passion lenses that extend when focusing. Heck, I even hate ZOOMS that extend when zooming, but not as much. It's the only thing I don't like about my Tammy. My Canon 10-22 and 70-200 both have intrnal zoom, the length remains constant.

I only do this on my lens that extends during focusing to get it back to minimum length. It's the one USM lens that doesn't allow any kind of manual focus in AF mode. (the MF ring just won't move in AF mode).

Thanks yea, I forgot USM is differnt. I was refering to my Canon 18-55 and Tamron 70-300, and the 70-300 comes out a long way, so needs to be put back all the time. But I will continue to put it into MF, if it's not good to do it in AF.
