Well, I've just finished voting and commenting on this challenge and think I've scored it higher overall than any previously. The quality of some of the shots is superb with many being well above average.

In view of comments made here about zoo entries and the like, I've read, and re-read the challenge description many times. The vast majority of the submissions are of non-domesticated mammals, birds etc. And to top that most appear to be 'in a natural environment'. Many, I am sure were captured in the wild. I have seen only one image that shows any form of enclosure. On the whole although these animals may not have been photographed in their NATIVE habitat, I think nearly everyone has managed to at least make the surroundings NATURAL.

Good luck everybody and thank you for sharing some great photos.

It's not 'natural' for a _ _ _ _ _(or wildcat of any kind) to hang out in front of colored concrete that is supposed to look like a rock formation.

I'm enjoying the comments and am thankful for the Favorite.
Voters either think it's a DNMC or like it a lot.
Non-zoo, semi-controversial. :)

I've got a couple of comments from voters who don't believe mine was a natural capture, which really bugs me. It was definitely taken in the wild. There is no sign of anything man made in the shot, but then again I didn't have wide open vistas in the background.

The narrow minded voters need to think a little wider than what is possible in the USA or Eurpoe and realise that DPC community is a world wide community.

interesting. 50 more views than BrenB and idnic. Similar number of votes. Score is about where I expected it. But, the 2 favs are better than anything else.

Dang it. I pasted the scores from the wrong challenge.
Here are the correct ones for Wildlife II.

I'm fairly happy with my score, just hoping for a few more comments.

It's natural for 80% of the viewers on this site to see a wildcat of any kind in front of those colored concrete rocks, and that is there natural environment now. Could someone please define non-domesticated?

I sometimes don't get it. A couple of 2s and 3s just rolled in. I know, blue ribbon winners have 2s and 3s and sometimes 1s, and this is no blue ribbon shot in this competition, but even on the curve I don't think it deserves a set of 6 votes in a row averaging 2.5 pts.

blah.

Please, ignore this post. I just thought that this one could do better, given the challenge description and all the hoopla around domesticated lions and wild house cats. I had to vent, realizing that I am only pissing against the wind with this, and all that could happen from it is I'll get wet.

Here's my score:

I was thinking, for the next week's challenge, would it be acceptable if I overlay a subtle polar coordinates grid in photoshop on top of my image, so that it is obvious that it is off-center? Just to eliminate potential DNMCs :-)
01/28/2006 02:21:09 PM · #99
This is my second challenge entry and it is doing better then my first (best of 2005). Funny thing is that I personally like my 2005 entry better then the wildlife.

But I've received some good comments on my "wildlife" shot so I appreciate that! When the challenge is over I'll add some comments to my shot about what I really tried to get and enter (but couldn't). My mother-in-law thought I was crazy.

This is the first challenge I've entered and I'm doing much better than I expected. I'm very pleased with the feedback I've received. Apparently my sharpening needs work...ha!

I would love to climb above a 6.0 but don't forsee that happening. I was sitting with a 5.996 and then decended again.

Domesticated: To train or adapt (an animal or plant) to live in a human environment and be of use to humans.

Whether some of the DPCers here like to admit, an animal living in a zoo is living in a human environment. They are not providing food for themselves, they are not forced to find a means of survival, and they hardly ever see any confrontation I'm sure. Zoo shots to me are of wild animals who are in a natural environment...it's just too borderline for me. When I think of wild I think of Animals out there living, not being kept alive by something else providing for them.

Just my 2 cents.
