I'm totally new to photography and am learning quite well.can filters like, say a polarizer filter, be used along with something as stupid as a Fuji Finepix A202? (site)

Cokin have an A series adaptor for compact cameras which screws into the tripod mount. Check out //www.cokin.fr/ico10-p0B-AN.html for further info.

I could quite fancy this kind of thing myself... does anyone know if you can get IR filters for this sort of set-up as well (i.e. the one that screws into the tripod bit)? I'd love to be able to get some good IR shots without having to upgrade my camera to one which can take filters as part of its design.

I may be wrong but I don't think that you can get IR slot in filters due to ingression of light around the filter.

Not to sure how well it would work but it may be possible to attach a filter directly to the lens tube of your 401 with a ring of 'blu-tac'.

Try SRB (//www.srbfilm.co.uk/index1.html), SpeedGraphic (//www.speedgraphic.co.uk) or Jessops (//www.jessops.co.uk) for suitable filters, something like the Hoya IR72 should do it.
