So, the blue ribbon is a nice picture, but I just do not get why so many people were so 'transfixed' with it. Was the picture taken at 'Le Grand Palais'?

Did you notice the score difference between the three winners? I think some pictures in this challenge could have scored better. That is a really strange feeling because some people seem to have different tastes.

Anyway, I respect the winner and his obvious talent, but I wonder if some people feel this subjectivity when voting a picture.

Thanks

Maybe I'm missing what you're saying...I was under the impression that EVERYONE had different tastes and that's what makes photography (or life in general for that matter) fun, you will NEVER EVER EVER please everyone all the time so do what you like and enjoy it.

I think despite people having different taste they still know a good image and a lot of people (like myself) consider the tecnical stuff when voting not just whether they like the subject or not (the way I think it should be by the way)

The winning picture is, hands down, one of the best pictures on this site. As opposed to all the flower, eye, and water shots we normally see.....JJ's picture is just photography in it's most raw form.

It doesn't take much talent to shoot a flower with water on it in a controlled environment.. Capturing a fleeting moment in time like JJ's picutre did....now that...that is talent.

Just my opinion...

talent, patience, and not a little bit of luck.
Also, "one of the best pictures on this site" is your opinion and subjective. If someone doesn't like it, that's their opinion as well.

Just to clarify.

What stare-at-the-sun said; JJ's blue-ribbon shot is hands-down one of the best images ever posted at DPC. It could easily have made the one of Life Magazine's "pictures of the year" issues if it had been published there in the heyday of that great photojournalistic magazone. In fact, one thing that intrigues me about it is that it has the "feel" of something shot forty years ago or more, somethign about the clothing, maybe, I donno.

I'm truly in awe of that shot, it's extraordinarily good. And I don't say such things lightly.

Robt.

That's why I put the "Just my opinion..." on the bottom of my post:P

I don't think talent is restricted to one area of photography. JJs photography is excellent, he's a talented photographer, and we're fortunate to have him post his pictures at DPChallenge.

But it's good to remember that there are many kinds of talents when it comes to photography.

Just my opinion .... :)

It's cool Artyste.....I do the whole "selective reading" thing a lot, lol. Thank god for books on cd's...if it wasn't for that I never would of got through the Chronicles of Narnia...

I understand what you meant Bear music. This shot could have been shot forty years ago. It might be the principal character who emphazised this feeling. I am almost certain that the picture was shot at Le Grand Palais, I was over there for Christmas. I am surprised that most people are 'old' and wear old kind of clothing. Maybe I need more time with this picture.

I have to agree that JJ's image is absolutely amazing and probably his best work to date.
Congrats JJ - I am in awe.

That said, and in tune with the subject line, how in the world does an image hit the 50% mark in a challenge, yet clearly missed the "single-out a person in a crowd" by using sheep. (cool shot though)
Someone enlighten me please. Animals (sheep, dog, birds, etc) did not meet this challenge, no matter how out of the box one could think, yet scored better than shots that clearly did.
:(

I'm still trying to figure out how a shot with unbeliveably shoddy post-processing made it above a 5.. I'm beginning to think that The National Institute For the Blind is having a "Learn To Vote on Photography" seminar.

The top ten were all votes of 10 or 9 from me. They're all wonderful shots.

One thing that DPC voting public did with this blue ribbon winning shot is calmed me down when I click my update button.

Right now, when I see my score dip by 0.05 on a single vote, I just say to myself: jjbeguin got quite a few 2s, 3s, and 4s for his singled out photo, what can I expect with this POS I entered!? And I continue with my clicking happily knowing that 1s, 2s, and 3s will happen no matter what.

I was thinking, for the first time since I joined this site, I will actually miss a photo on the home page! I am usually bored with them by weeks end...but JJ's eye contact??!! I can not get over how I love this shot, I just can't stop going back and having another peek over and over :)

This is the comment that I posted on JJ's shot...

JJ, You once again have amazed me. Stunned me beyond words. I did not vote on all these entries because of time constictions but if I had you would have gotten my first ever 10. This shot is simply stunning. There is a story here to be told. A feeling that is almost universal. It sends a shiver down my spine. You have given me a gift. If anyone ever asks what my all time favorite DPC shot is now I have a choice. It is this shot.
Kudos
TC
PS. Please amaze me again.
