first, thanks to all who voted and commented! this challenge really was a blast. it was one of those sweet occasions where work and play intersected. i loved the idea of this challenge, and kept my eye open for it all week. in fact, i wound up with over 30 shots i considered as entries!
to answer some of the questions raised in the comments
* this is the former governor of virginia, mark warner, waiting for the new governor, tim kaine, to be sworn in.
* the woman in front is a sign-language interpretor.
* those are not his hands desaturated! he was wearing gloves!!
* they passed out those ponchos to everyone except the press (dignitaries, as well as those invitied to attend the ceremony)
* it was pouring off and on all day. i had a small umbrella and plastic grocery bags protecting me and my gear ;-)
post-processing
i adjusted the levels, and that took care of popping out the subject
next, i played with crops. (it's cropped this way because that's the way i like it!)
next, i took some of the color out of the woman's coat and hair so i wouldn't compete as much
and lastly, i tossed in a slight dab of gaussian blur
the original
here are the ones i left behind link
