I'm going to my first Chinese New Year celebration next weekend with a dragon boat reggatta, lion dancing, firecrackers, etc. Anybody ever photographed this event before? I'd love to see some photos for inspiration! Thanks!

I usually try to shoot some of the local denver stuff. It's fun.

The key to these types of events in getting there early to pick out a prime spot. Most of the "Pro" looking folks ("L" lensers) had scouted out the prime spots but I was able to get close enough to get a couple shots off.

Lot's of colors especially reds. Red is considered a lucky color during the New Years so expected plenty of that color.

Chinese New Years is on the 29th of January so folks may want to wander to their local Chinatown the next week or two to shot the festivities and get some colorful candids, etc.

While much of the action will happen on *the* day, you might find some things happening the day before or the day after as well... worth checking out, just in case.

I'm sure you'll have lots of fun!

Thanks for the suggestion paddles- as it turns out there are events on Friday and Saturday as well. Sounds like I'm gonna be busy ;)

See all the pics here. Thank you for the tips everyone! It was a good event, though a bit tough to shoot. The crowds were tightly packed so my shooting style was a bit different than I'm used to. Made for some interesting photos!

Thank you! We had a lot of fun. I'm pleased with the results, though we did stand around for about an hour looking for a pretty girl and some pretty light to try to do some Librodo-esque photos. No luck on either count :( Oh well!

Nice work ahaze! I love the dof on many of your shots. Great color too!

I am going to Los Angeles' Chinese New Year parade next Saturday (Feb 4th). I can't wait. I will share pix after :)

Thanks all for the compliments. And faidoi, I appreciate the sentiment but I don't submit to the challenges anymore- I realized that I'm not comfortable with competing. But I still come to the forums occasionally :)
