My self-perceived masterpiece 'round' picture: 66 votes, Avg 5.0000.
Hmmm... this got me to wondering how photos are judged.
On the whole, I do better at member challenges than open challenges.
Examining open challenges, I am wondering if people vote based on whether they would like to hang that picture on their living-room wall, as opposed to member challenges where photos are judged on a more artistic level.
I really thought I was onto a winner with my pic, but with only 1 (positive) comment it's difficult to see where I misjudged!
Discuss!

So you don't think that 'do I want to hang it on my wall and look at it every day and learn to love it as I live' is an artistic judgement? :-> Just curious, and trying to restate things to be able to discuss them more thoroughly.
Also, Round only just started, so you might want to give it five or six days before you start despairing that it has no comments. :->

I think that some of the greatest art consists of things I would not necessarily want to hang on my wall. Art can be about several things, only one of which is about looking 'nice' and good for decor. Art can also lead people to examine themselves and the world around them without necessarily looking like a print you would want to hang on your wall. I feel more qualified to talk about art in musical terms where the role of a piece of music can vary from entertainment for the middle classes, rebellion for teenagers, a source of employment for servants, a way of seeking spiritual transcendence, a way of examining the mathematical universe, relaxation, dancing, etc, etc. |

How are you seeing results before the voting has concluded? I can't figure out how to look at any current standings -- only after the voting has concluded.
And for what it's worth: I don't give a 10 to anything I wouldn't want to hang on my wall. |

I think you're using 'hang on your wall' to mean 'Martha Stewart would use it in redecorating a house,' which is not at all the same thing. :-> To me, 'would I hang this on my wall?' means, among other things, 'Do I want to look at it it just once and move on, or do I want to look at it a long time?'

Not being American, I don't know very much about Martha Stewart, other than she's in prison... but I suspect that's very much what i AM talking about here in relation to open challenges! Or 'Athena' prints... |

Leaving aside what i would hand on my wall and what i would'nt, I usually rate all the photos and then go back and comment on all my highest rated ones and often a few of the ones I rated poorly, I think this challenges me to really think about what makes a photo unpleasing as well as pleasing. And hopefully helps the person who did an unpleasing shot improve a little. So you may still get some commments is early on still, also open challenges IMO have so many more photos hard to comment on all of them. |

I don't really base my scores on whether I'd hang it on my wall. If that was the case, my voting average would be way lower (I'm picky!).
It's all about what 'wows' me. A combination of their execution, idea, etc etc. |

I think you may be right about the open voting, I base my vote on two things, do I like the photo, which is how I view all art, and second on how good the picture is, focus, exposure, things like that. Then I use each for half of the score I give. |

I don't judge all images by whether I'd hang it on my wall. I try to look at a pic and ask how or where it could be useful. Some examples would be is it appropriate for : text books and other books, advertising, product packaging, wrapping paper, wall paper, paper towels, dinner ware, novel cover, tee shirt and clothing, etc. Just take a day to look around and see all the places photographs are used. Probably a small percentage are used as wall art, although I admit I have no statistic, but am guessing.
Btw, I made a wallpaper border sample from one of my pictures of a magnolia. We need to maintain open minds to vote beyond "would I hang it on my wall?" I think the images that score highest probably DO meet that criteria with lots of voters, because they have mass appeal, but that isn't the only purpose for photos.

Greetings
So many and entries and so many really good photos. I did an overview of all the shots and looked for the most imaginative, then qualified them by how well they conveyed the challenge perameters. Hope this gives some insight.
Have Fun |
