Yes, "sweet" it is ... and enough time has passed since the challenge that it even qualifies as a dish served cold.
Now I'm concerned that my original (posted) score of 7 might seem too low.
Congrats, Bear! |

Hey, congrats Robert! Goes to show, you can't judge a photo by it's score... or is that a book by it's cover... wait, I'm confused ;-)

I wasn't around for that challenge so I won't comment on what happened then.
I will say it is a wonderful photograph and you captured it perfectly.
I do have to add that I will take and extra minute or two, when I see a photo that doesn't immediately convey the the challenge. I also have to say that I reserve 1's and 2's for the cell phone quick snaps that show up in every challenge with more then 300 entries.
Either way, you WIN big time and deserve to be congratulated.
Keep it up

Congrats Bear! I am almost ashamed to say that I voted the shot down in the challenge even though I do like it very much. It's nice to see that you are getting recognition for a shot that you did obviously put a lot of though and effort into. I guess sometimes we DPC'ers just need to be smacked in the head with the challenge theme in shots...

I agree with tristalisk. When you are judging self portrait after self portrait (244 in total) and you see a drop of water on a branch (nice picture, nice bokeh and everything), my immediate thought is, 'someone's in the wrong challenge!' Without an explanation, sometimes the title doesn't make sense to the 'ordinary' person whoever the 'ordinary' person is.
Shots like this entered in a Self Portrait comp are risky. You took the risk - and good on you. But you have to expect that people will give you 1's when they don't get it.
This challenge was beyond my time. In all honesty, evern if I would have understood it (and I probably wouldn't have) as a picture it ranks a 5 or 6 to me. Just being honest.
But I admire you for doing something different and for that I give you a 10. |

Bear, Sorry to ask the question twice.
When you say that they saw it in your portfolio, do you mean that they saw it on your DPC portfolio, or a portfolio you presented to them?
Thanks.
PS. I wonder if you could ask for a DQ on the picture below it and see if you can somehow score that brown. |

The work's all done online; I've never met any of these people. I directed them to my DPC Portfolio, and told them also to browse others' portfolios, that I might be able to negotiate a release on any image they particularly liked.
They were looking at one of Joey's also, but in the end went for the simplicity of the dewdrop shot versus the in-your-face "disfigured grace" of Joey's work :-)

Quoted from Robt's comments after the challenge...
Originally posted by Bear_Music: Unfortunately, what I am seeing over and over again (not just with my own images, indeed not even primarily with my own images) is that people seem to be "voting" in DEFENSE of their own point-of-view, rather than sitting back (as I believe they ought to, or what's the point?) and letting OTHER points of view sweep over them, trying to appreciate images as what they are intended to be rather than as what the viewer "wishes" they might be.

This, I have found, is the secret of a truly rewarding experience here at DPC. I have found my mind open to many new ideas, and what I see through my own viewfinder getting better, once I started trying to see through the photographers eye as I vote. I think you have stated my experience extremely well.
I, also, have sold my lowest scoring photos for almost enough to pay for my camera. It certainly keeps things in perspective.
I'm very glad for you - I know the feeling and wish all could have it at least once! Good for you!

Your photograph is lovely, Robt. I gave this image a 4 because I felt it denied the spirit of the challenge. I look at DP Challenges as if they were an assignment. If my editor requested a photo of a lighthouse and (in the spirit of artistic license) I returned with a photo of a frog, he might be a bit upset. But that's just me!
Congrats on the selection! |

No, far from it :-) I was for 25 years a working architectural photographer, and had images published in magazines hundreds of times. Since I've retired, I'm not seeing much publication, however, nor have I actively been seeking it. The main reason I posted this thread was simple; no image I have entered in here got hammered quite this bad (though I have entered, of course, many worse images) and so I thought this might amuse some people as much as it amuses/pleases me :-)

Congrats, bear! Great job.
I've said it many times, and in fact said it to Alienyst yesterday, you can't go by DPC scores. They just aren't always accurate. This is just more proof of that!

So Bear - Is it good or bad that a self portrait gets the cover of a book with this title :-))
Congrats, Thanks for the reminder that DPC is only part of the world :-) |
