Hi,
I've had some comments that suggest that a plain white border distracts/detracts from my image.
IMAGE REFERENCE & LINK REMOVED
I wonder what the consensus on DPC was regarding borders?

I don't think you should be discussing challenge entries until after the voting has finished.

You should remove the link to the picture... |

Yep, very bad manners to reveal your entry before voting is over... |

I think it's because the hands are so close to the frame. IF there was more space on the sides it would look better.

I have very strong feelings about borders. Nine times out of ten, I hate them!!!! Especially big, thick, black ones. In our 640 pixel world, I'd much rather look at an interesting picture than a boring border.
There... now I feel better.
P.S. I've never voted down a picture because it has a border.

I have, when the border was so grossly distracting that it began to wreak havoc with my senses.

I've got some comments on the border here - it is made so it enhances (IMO) the photo. What are your thoughts on this kind of border (more involved with the photo than not)?

Agreed, I find 9 out of 10 (or something along those lines) borders on this site distracting. Just because it's plain white doesn't mean it isn't distracting. If it's too large or if it's uneven it can be very distracting. It can also be distracting if it clashes with the image (this is less common with white borders, but can happen).
Now, I wont vote a photo lower jsut because it has a border, but I will vote it lower if it's a bad border for that photo. When you chose to put a border on your photo, that border becomes part of the presentation of the image, much like the title. If the border doesn't fit the photo or is distracting, it detracts from the overall experience of viewing an image. Simply put, a good image is not as good when presented with a bad border. People need to think about how they're presenting their images, because it effects how the images are percieved. When we vote on images, we're judging everything we're presented with. We can't just choose to ignore the outermost 10 pixels. |

Well, I like how you have parts of the image over the border. Think it adds some effect. So, you don't have a border, just to have a border. It was an artistic decision on your part.
There should always be a reason to add the border. If for example the image doesn't work well against a neutral grey background, a border might be required.

IMO, good attempt but it adds nothing to the appeal of the photo. Borders that attempt t give a photo a "framed and hung in a gallery" feel just don't work. The best border is the one you don't notice at all. Very thin black or white line is best, again IMO. |

Whoops, sorry about that. I'm quite new to DPC and wasn't sure of the etiquette on this issue.
Won't happen again! |

I use borders a lot on my print images, but now I rarely use anything more than a 2-3 pixel black line on entries, if anything at all. |

The only border I've used on an entry. I was hoping to emphasize that the image was square (for the Shapes Challenge). Guess I wasn't that successful... lol

In some cases a border enhances the image but should be a thin edge around the picture. Occasionally a bicolor border can be used to good effect if the colors reflect or complement colors already present in the image. I don't vote down on bordered images unless they are too wide and tend to dominate the image. Textured borders should never be used. |

Best Of 2005 is the first time in 19 challenges that I have used a border & the first comment I got was that the border is a bit distracting. I probably would have used borders more often but I have only just worked out how to do simple borders. I like smaller subtle borders. The larger thicker borders I think really do detract from the image that you are looking at.

I like borders as you can tell...I think they add to the overall image, when used properly.

Nice example, Paul. I would prefer the yellow band thinner at the top and sides, but this works very well. |
