This is stupid. To race through over 800 images trying to comment on each just to meet some dumb arbitrairy percentage for no other reason then to say you did, is a waste of my time and yours.
Since this thread has started I have recieved a couple of really dumb comments on my image in this challenge. I appreciate most of the 29 comments so far even the dumb ones, but it makes no sense.
I would suggest trying to comment on the images that move you weather good or bad and also ones you rate low as a helpful suggestion for the photographer, not sarcastic or three word ignorant comments, like "too much sharpening."
You betray your ignorance twice by dropping a bomb and leaving and then not to reveal who you are while voting is going on tells me you don't stand behind your comments. As a matter of fact, I don't think people should be able to leave a comment unless they reveal themselves, that might make people think twice before leaving remarks that may be misconstrued. It dosn't do anything but cause bad feelings for the photographer.
Oh and no sharpening was used on the image in question.

Don't get too worked up about it. A lot of voters (myself included) hold back their comments until they can know a bit more about the picture and sometimes the photo too. If you really feel you need some critiquing, post a thread about it in Individual Photo discussion.
You can also PM me for my really unprofessional opinion.
I know the feeling though, I think I have 2 or 3 useful or meaningful comments on my pic out of 14 comments. On the other hand, I'm really glad that 14 people at least were moved to say something.
I personally try my best to give a good and a bad for most of my comments... I actually succeed at being balanced almost 30% of the time too!
Wait it out, it will be ok!
Oh yeah, and remember commenters viewing photos are indeed ignorant. They don't know a great deal of information about the shot, just what they can see and feel. Take it for what it's worth. Wait until after the challenge for more advanced technical stuff. |

I’m about to be excommunicated! Time got away from me and it looks like I’m never going to make it.
I’ll keep plugging away though. |

I'm not sure if this was directed at me, probably not since I keep my name there while commenting. But, I have to point out... I know most people are "touchy" about their photos. I try to only leave nice comments, even if it's only "I like it". I also try to leave "MY opinion". It may not always be right, but it is mine. I don't do it that often since I really couldn't tell you how to improve. I'm sorry that some people get really upset if you point out something you think might help (without knowing the actual steps taken, such as sharpening). But, I also think people should look over the comments that they themselves have left before they preach to someone else about what is helpful and what isn't. I'm not a great photographer, I'm not even a good photographer. I just like to take pictures. And I've seen some comments that would make me cringe and think, well, maybe I should only post for my friends and family. But then I pull myself back up. As long as I like it, then I'm OK. And if someone took the time to leave me a comment, then I appreciate it for what it is...their opinion. |

Ok, for people that get mad when someone comments about processing that wasn't done on their photo.. take a look at it this way:
People comment on what they *see*. If they see an image that looks over-processed to them, they'll say so. If it wasn't, then you as the photographer can either a) ignore it completely and mark it up to inexperience or monitor incompatiblity, or any number of other things, or b)you can think about maybe *why* someone sees it that way and try and look at your photo from a fresh point of view.
I think that's it good to try and phrase your comment in a way that says 'to my eyes' or 'in my view' or something similar, instead of just presenting it as fact, but I tend to take every comment I get from that commenters point of view. If someone says my image is over-neatimaged during the challenge, but I didn't use neatimage, whatever.. they see it as being more smooth than usual. That's fine. I just wait till the end of the challenge, and either let my photographers comments speak for itself, or leave a post-challenge comment to say what I did or didn't do.
It's not worth the time or energy to get mad at commenters for making an effort.

OK as I see it everyone who is commenting on my last post missed my point entirely. I don’t even know why I bring it up or why people choose to respond and don’t address my original point. Did you even read my post?
I will try again.
If you want to set for yourself some arbitrary, none conformist goal of commenting on each and every picture in a challenge with over 800 entries, I pity you. For what useful purpose would anyone burden themselves to accomplish this ridiculous feet? What sadistic self hate would bring you to a masochistic point of mentioning this to anyone let alone to place a post online to show everyone what a martyr you can be? Where in any reasonable context does this edify anyone except your personal need to portray yourself as some kind of photographic annalist of gargantuan proportions? Mind you who gives a crap to know that you would spend hours and hours sitting at your computer looking at all of over 800 images and bestowing upon all of us less pontificating waifs your pearls of wisdom concerning our heart felt creations that you say “Too much Sharpening” (mind you in an image which no sharpening was used.)
How in heaven’s name did I ever take a picture before you came into my life you anonymous deity from above?
Kelli this isn’t nor was my last post was directed at you. Feel better? Good. I know I do now.:)

Ummmm,
MPRPRO, I have high respect for your talents. I think that you have 'the eye' that every photog strives for, and are under rated, and seen as an average photog like myself.
I, in my masochistic way, burdened myself, and only myself, a goal, to comment in my usual manner on all pixrs. I did not start this thread to be a martyr, nore do I believe anyone else tried to blow themselves up with the 829 submissions in the "Best of 2005" challenge.
I simply gave myself a goal, a personal goal, a worthy goal, and happened to start a thread to invite others to acheive the same goal.
Yes, I do agree that some people need an old fashion Singapore Caneing for not really going into depth of what they really see, and explaining what they are commenting on. I, myself, have never strayed from my normal format for a critique.
If you ever have recieved a critique from me, you should know how I critique, and should know that I am no martyr. All 50% of the comments I made were of the usual manner of how I was taught to critique, and I never took any shortcuts.
The reason for this edifaction of this gargantuan, sadistic, pontification of a goal was to maybe include those pix that probly did not get a comment, or a proper critique. I felt sorry. I was weak in beliveing that I could share some of my experience, some pearls of wisdom as you say, to help along in the efforts of those that don't get a good solid critique.
I, because of numbness to my brain, and to my hands, did not acheive the 100% mark. I failed. 50% of the pixrs will not get a comment from me. But, because of this thread, weather the comment was good, or bad, all 100% of the pixrs did receive some sort of comment. A victory to some, and a waste of time to others.
I respect your comment, but don't agree with it.
If you never have recieved a comment from me, then test me. Try me out. Give me a challenge. Let me show you what a solid, proper, professional comment should be. I promise you that I will not hold back, and that my style is in EVERY pixr that I critiqued.
Happy Monday.

As someone who commented on all the pics, I did it as a challenge to myself, because I don't often comment on a lot of photos during a challenge, and my comments recieved was higher than my comments given. I worked out that if I commented on them all, my given would be higher than my recieved, which has always been a target for me, just one that has slowly slipped away week by week.
Now I dont pretend that my comments are paragraphs and paragraphs long, but I do try to always say what parts of a photo I like, and what I don't particularly like. With the latter, I try to give maybe a suggestion as to how I would perhaps "fix" it. Sometimes I find a photo that I wouldn't change a thing about, so I think it would be nice just to tell them that.
If you feel I've wasted my time, and my comments are worthless, then that's fair enough. However, I feel I've learned a lot from commenting, found a lot of fav photos that I might not have otherwise, and hopefully helped a lot of people with ideas for improvements. Afterall, that's what comments are for.

Personally I like any comment, at least someone has taken the time and it's their time to spend.
Ben's comment on mine was dead on, warts and all.
Can't we all just get along?

Well thanks for listening and getting my point American_Horse. I will say this though, look at the part of your response I made bold. You didn't fail, everyone can't be Jutilda # Comments: Made: 11483 # Helpful: 10432
I appreciate every good intention you had starting this thread, but I had to expound on my feelings about this. (Got a little creative in my writing style too didn’t I? I noticed you noticed that, thanks.)
It was taken by some I am sure that the percentage was what was important and not trying to help or contribute to another's work. So many people think this is just a site to make friends and chat and send little jokes to everyone or play games. Not to me. I want to improve my skills and take everything I do here seriously. I can have fun too, look at my entry to Nude III, but there is a time and place.
Your cut yourself short when you say you failed. I have never come close to 50% and the way you comment I am sure at least 400 people are grateful you did comment on their images. Unrealistic goals are a path to sure failure, to gain at least 99& of helpful comments I would think would be more fulfilling reward. Why not start a thread "Most commented and most helpful?"
Sonifo you made me really laugh, thanks and also thanks for commenting on my PAD too.
Konador you commented on my image as well, I appreciate that and you also do not hide your name during voting. I think that is great. I also wrote to you and thanked you for the comment.
If someone says in a comment "I don't get it 1" and then I can't see who they are, that is a bummer. After voting I go and find they don't have a camera, don't have a portfolio and never entered a challenge, I take it personally. That schmuck's comment is on my image forever and everyone will see it and there is nothing I can do about it. I had a few like that and to me they should be removed from DPC.
Don’t get me wrong, I do not think this site is all about me. I comment, I try to be as helpful as I can in commenting.
I learned my lesson in a thread I commented on once in a sarcastic way and found out how much of a dope I was the hard way when the SC sent me a personal note about how my post was removed. I promptly sent an apology.
I hope this further promotes some kind of harmony here, even if we do disagree American_Horse, if everyone followed your lead, I would have never posted this.

Do I give a rat’s ass? Well in so many words yes. I do care that's why I want nothing but the best for this site, but I don't want to blow happy smoke up you’re... Well I know you know what I mean. Reality can be rough sometimes.
As people get to know me some like that they never have a doubt about my opinion and appreciate my openness, some never talk to me again. So for those of the latter ilk, move on I am just a crazy old man, those of the former, thanks for putting up with my rants, I am really a nice guy down inside somewhere. Maybe if some of you put up with me long enough, I'll even believe that last statement too.
