I'm going on a trip in a couple weeks and I figured I should buy a couple extra batteries for my 20D. I don't want to buy the "grip" because it's too bulky. I just want to get a couple extra batteries. An authentic Canon battery costs somewhere between $35-50...but I can buy a generic battery for around $10. What advantages/disadvantages are there...either way? Is a generic battery just as good?

I don't know the technical differences, but most of the batteries I have are generic batteries from ebay. They all work fine; I've noticed no difference between them and my canon ones.

I've had (still have) 2 original Canon batteries and one NoName battery, and I can't notice the difference in how long they last. Perhaps I was lucky (as is general rule with noname stuff - it is quality control where the difference is, so the probability to get good stuff is smaller than with the trademarked stuff).

Btw, if you get a grip, then you can use AA batteries just in case you get stranded where there is no plug to recharge the Lithium ones.

Get onto Ebay and buy generic ones. I have 4 generic batteries and they have all given the same performance as the Canon battery I had with the camera. I got 2 for £16, I think they were around £30 EACH for a canon brand one.......I hate being ripped off

Our generics rule. I use them all the time no problemo.

Generics have worked fine for me, I've even found higher capacity generics than what Canon offers. I've had good luck with compuplus.com.
