Going through the Best of 2005 challenge (and I've only seen 256 pictures so far), I'm seeing lots of close-ups (as in "in your face" close-ups) of what would be considered wild animals...lions, gorillas (LOTS of gorillas...what's up with that?), etc. To me, some of them just look stuffed, like at a museum.

Is it just me? Do they look stuffed to you? Did anyone else notice an unusually high number of gorillas?

I'm not saying they aren't good. Just commenting on the number ant that they just don't seem to be real. Most are excellent.

Best of 2005 had gorillas and lions.

Has anyone noticed that Off Center II has lots of seagulls and house cats? (not stuffed this time, though)

I love animal photos, but it is no fun taking them at the zoo. In South Africa, hunting is considered a sport and practised by many people. I don't think shooting an animal with a big rifle as sport. I would much rather take my camera and go and shoot with that.
Animal shots in the wild are amazing. Only problem is getting the carnivors - with a rifle you can shoot them when they atack - with a camera you can throw the camera down to enable yourself to run faster. Imagine a Massive Elephant Bull charging at you - amazing action shot (and the last you will ever take). If you ever see a photo on my portfolio of an Elephant Bull charging at the Camera - have a moment of silence for me.

And I just flipped through the thumbnails for Free Stdy. Lots of lighthouses. I love lighthouses, I live lighthouses. I almsot submitted a lighthouse.

Why does it seem that with certain challenges, people submit a lot of the same subject?

There`s lots of them because they are almost as easy as pie to pull off. What`s easier than driving to the zoo, getting in front of the monkey cage with a long lens and waiting for cousin chimp or gorilla to do something anthropomorphic and press the shutter.

Most people who have a good grasp of exposure, focus, depth of field and a decent camera/lens can pull these off if the existing light is decent. Not saying that any goof can do it, but its pretty easy to pull off compared to good street photography or true nature photography where animals are going about their daily routine. Ever notice how there are many more better animal shots from zoos than from nature? And don't use the "I live too far from nature" excuse either. Most people can drive less than an hour from home and they will most likely be in a rural setting that is teeming with animals if you know where to look.

Another thing is, of course there will be lots of animal shots cuz we just finished a wildlife challenge. All the seconds are popping up in this challenge. That's what I did.

Off to eat my Oreo ice cream. Yum!
