Does anyone else have this problem?

As much as I would love to enter every challenge or even more challenges for me it isn't always a matter of not having time. I think I am hesitant about entering because I have a fear of failure...or rejection and it isn't all about being in the top 10, or even the top 100, it's more about just not thinking I have a good idea or concept. The more challenges that go by, the more this really bugs me.

Any ideas on how to overcome this?

There are ideas everywhere. Sometimes we get in a slum...just look through online albums and just go shoot what you're into at that time.

As far as where you finish here at DPC, that should never be an issue. A comment will mean 10 times more to you, when you have entered a photo that you love than when you entered a photo that you think other people will love. Good luck...just shoot and submit what you like and focus on the comments, not the placement.

Are you wearing Nikes?

I was at Heida's Profile page moments ago. One of the best ever on DPC--
Even somw of her work were low scoring and not well received. So what! The more you enter, the more you will learn. Stop biting your nails and worrying what the other girls will be wearing to the dance. Enter as many as you can and have fun. To heck with the scores.

Hey if I worried about what everyone thought, I certainly wouldn't have even registered on this site!...I am learning from every challenge...and it's fun to see what I can come up with...good or not so good :)

Looking at your portfolio, I don't think you have to fear rejection at all! You have some pretty awesome shots in there! Why don't you just make up your mind to enter the January Free Study and go for it. That way you don't have to worry whether or not other people have interpreted the challenge the same way you have.

As for whether or not voters accept your idea or concept for other challenges, you just have to trust yourself and put it out there. As long as you like the shot that you have submitted and enjoy coming up with ideas that you think fit the challenge, it really doesn't matter if anyone else approves or agrees.

My Dad always said, "you never know how things will turn out unless you give them a try!"

Just take a deep breath and hit the submit button! 8)

I just worked on a shot for the Road challenge - went out to shoot it, took an hour ot process it, kinda like it - but not a favorite....then thought about the awesome road shots I anticipate and decided to sit this one out.

Everyone here is correct, IMO, and I totally agree.

As for me, I never enter thinking it will fail. Even before I knew what the hell I was entering into. LOL....I also don't enter thinking I will ribbon, but have gotten excited over the prospect of that happening a few times.

The best thing to do here is just set personal goals. Say, your next entry. Set it low. If it makes a 4.9, be happy. If not, strive for it in the next. Then as you meet it, bring up that goal. Next thing you know you will be setting a 6.0 for yourself or higher. The premise is, you are really only competing with yourself and no one else.

Now, if a ribbon happens to come your way, (and not to down other great photos here, but a ribbon is usually a crap shoot with so many entries and so much subjective voting), then it is only a bonus.

This is how I look at things, but I also strive to do my best for each challenge. For instance, Fantasy. Wanted to do one thing, couldn't do it, no models. Wanted to do something else, but not sure I can pull it off. A bit of a cost to it, and I have just contracted the flu. Not sure I will be well in time. SO, I found something a bit more close to home and entered that. My personal goal? Oh, a 5.0 I guess this time around. I set goals according to theme now, and according to what I think the appeal of my entry will have here at DPC. BUT, when I first started, I started at a 5.0 and have now seen those 6's I have been waiting for. So I know I am improving in my style, my appeal, as well as other's appeal. It just takes time and study and research, and to me, that is all the fun of it! Nothing more, nothing less.

i agree.

this is all fun and games anyway. the main point of this place (to me) is to learn more about photography and to challenge yourself to think more creatively. it can be a great way of getting feedback on your work too and to offer other people feedback. but it shouldnt be about worrying whether or not your work is good enough for the voters.

you say that you are not sure whether or not you have good concepts. well, good to who? do YOU think they arent good? or do you think that the people here on DPC won't think they are good?

i think that if you try out different concepts and ideas more and more, then you will just improve. regardless of what score you get, if your photography is something meaningful and special to you, then take pride in a job well done.

It is always safer to say that some people have preferences, and therefore some people like your pictures and some do not. In my case, I do not care what people thinks what is 'best' or what is 'worse'. I do not think that you should worry abour your pictures, shoot it and if it feels right to you, share with us (via challenges for instance). Sometimes, you want to know what went wrong with one of your picture and ask people (see the excellent forum) a piece of advices or critics. To my mind, it is a good way to learn and to share point of views. So see you on the next challenge.

I agree with that. Take January's free study for example. Now, I have about 400 photos at LEAST to choose from. Very rough estimate, AND still more of January to go! LOL... I basically just picked one that I think has both appeal in looks, and in title, and says something. Tells a story. Not just another pretty picture kind of thing. Then again, some pretty picture just may win the ribbons and have no title, and just is universally appealing; but the reason I entered mine really is what makes the difference to me. Not who wins and why. So, shoot what you love, and see my thread entitled"Do comments bother you?"

Seriously, the only failure is to stop trying.
01/17/2006 06:49:11 PM · #13
how will you ever know how others really view your work until you enter? it's sort of the whole point of the site.. dp challenge. lol
01/17/2006 07:14:48 PM · #14
I definitely have a fear of failure.

After a string of really bad scores, I set myself a goal of not scoring below 5.0 this year. I'm off to a good start with 5.67 for shapes, and my best of 2005 is hovering around the 6.5 mark (my 2nd best score ever, if it stays there). Does that make me feel better? On the contrary now I'm even more scared of spoiling a run of good scores.

I don't really fear failure - after all, many of the folks here have more talent and practice than I'll ever have. But I do have fun trying when I get the time and inspiration! And yes, a good comment on a photo *you* like is worth way more than a 5+ score on a challenge you entered to please the voters.

In addition to being a good place to try to learn stuff, DPC is an *awesome* place to get to see pictures of the world - it's people and it's places. One of the coolest things about the site in my opinion.

Absolutely agree.

No one is paying you here. This is not a job interview. If you cannot risk failure here..then where?

Just make your photo as good as you can and sometimes, enter a photo you like and feel represents you and not the voters...makes a good roadmark (or skidmark) along the highway.

This is an excellent question and no easy answer. I am a soccer coach and always say to the players, "You can't score if you don't take the shot!" Easy to say, but tough to live by, I agree. During each week, watching scores, I go through a wild set of emotions ranging from "Yippee" to "Crap" to even pissed off sometimes. I guess it is all part of the creative process and we as artists feed off of emotion. So, as long as you don't measure your self-worth by the socres you recieve, you are making an investment in the future.
