With all the talk about masks it bears mentioning that a mask and a selection are essentially the same thing.

It is also important to mention that the "marching ants" display does not always enclose all the pixels in a selection and conversely that all the pixels inside it are not always all selected. "Marching ants" are displayed around the area where one half or more of the pixels are selected. There can be perfectly valid selections having no "marching ants" display at all.

Right, I'd never do that on a 640, but some people apparently do; anyway those were just the extremes.

----whew, ok, I feel better now :-)

As for clone opacity, it's in the tool definition bar along the top when you select the clone tool. Unless it's not in 5.5 at all, I can't remember. Id it's not there, make a duplicate layer from BG (you should do this anyway when cloning) and do your cloning on that, then you can fade the layer to adjust the clone opacity.

Ok, I understand. I will look for that, and if not, yep, I always clone on a dupe layer, and that I do know how to change the opacity, do it frequently with overlay, screen, gaus. blur etc. I have never (obviously) done it combined with the clone tool. I will definitely try it out! Thanks very much Robert, you ROCK!

...and thanks to the OP, for starting the thread :-)

Clone Tool opacity is set in the Options Pallette in older versions of PS.

You're welcome ... I know these things because I most-often use version 5.0 : )

This image was downsized to 640 pixels then had 3 roughly same-size selections made at, respectively, 2, 12, and 24 pixels of feathering, then the selected areas were deleted to show the white BG so you can see the feathering.

Note that these were RECTANGULAR selections, and that the more you feather the more the corners round off; in other words, the more you feather the less precisely the feathering follows the outline selected. If you are in the habit of using feathering, be aware that the last-selected feather radius becomes the default until it is changed; if you're ever trying to make a rectangular selection and find yourself bedeviled by rounded corners, check your feather radius; for square corners you need 0 feathering.
