This one's been sitting around in my "possible best-of" folder for months, but in the end I couldn't bring myself to enter it. It's very dear to my heart. Anyone else like it, or am I just weird? The black in the foreground is natural, the asphalt had just been recoated.

It occupies a significant portion of the composition and is very distracting and pulls my eye away from the rest of the scene. It doesn't seem to add anything, so I'd be interested in why you chose to include it. If there was some detail in the foreground then maybe I would be ok with it." |
My answer; that's my weirdness. I like the way the black void echoes the shape of the cabin, almost like a negative reflection.

I do like the way it reflects the cabin, but the complete lack of detail and complete blackness is what gets me. I need at least some indication that light is hitting the darn thing, LOL. It seems fake. Is there any detail at all in the original?

There is no detail whatsoever. It's literally as black as tar. And that sharp cookie TooCool has nailed it; "2001: A Space Odyssey" was definitely in my mind when I saw this.
Yes, it's a movie. From a great Arthur C. Clarke novel.

Hi Robert and fellow DPC members,
I have sent this message to Robert and I have also decided to add it here as well. I hope you will be able to visually see that I saw in his this image.
I think it has amazing perspective appeal. The focus point being the bottom edge of the front building, which could be the centre of a the letter X. You then can see a line going diagionally moving towards 2 o'clock direction, the second line going in the direction of 4 o'clock, the 3rd moving to 8 o'clock and the 4th moving towards 10 o'clock. These are only imvisible perspective lines but are so strong in this image. Does that make sence. I like it a lot. Well done Robert and make sure you keep it, and I am adding it to my favorites.

Maybe I SHOULD have entered this one, LOL. But I wouldn't have been able to stand it if it were hammered. I have added comments and data to the image fields. To answer Ubique, no this wasn't the Nikon; it was nowhere near that wide. This was the 20D with the 10-22mm Canon on it.
Thanks for all the lovely comments :-)

Judging by comments about a big void, lack of light, lack of detail, & "fakeness", I can see that different people use completely different criteria for judging photographs. I come more from the world of poetry and fine art, and what one person calls "fake" I call "abstract." I like a photograph to operate abstractly, i.e. in the realm of pure shape, texture and color. It's great when a photo can work abstractly AND realistically, but I don't need it to do much on the "real" level. In fact, I get a thrill when the reality of the subject matter is muted or even difficult to figure out.
This photo, though I'm not making it one of my "favorites," is certainly a good, stand-out photo, precisely for reasons that some were giving as negative. |
