Both great camera's, personally I would plump for the Nikon. If you could stretch tho, I can recommend the Canon 350D.

The good news is, these days its hard to buy a bad digital SLR if you stick to the big manufacturers.

Had I realised that Nikon would release the D70s I might have waited and got that, but I went for the Canon 350D as it had more going for it than the D70 that Nikon were selling at the time.

I have since invested in some decent Canon glass so a switch to Nikon is out of the question. I am going to save now and try for a Canon 5D next year (here's hoping)

This thread might help:
nikon vs canon

Search the Hardware forum and you'll find numerous threads discussing the differences between those two cameras :)

When I made the jump I went from a Fuji 4900Z to a Nikon D70. Seemed more intuitive for me and I have heard other Fuji users say the same. As for the D50 vs the 300D the D50 is better technology as it is newer.

Best bet for you though is to go out to a camera shop and actually hold and shoot them both. Go with what feels good to you. You can't really go wrong with whatever DSLR you choose.

This is exactly what I did in a camera store and Nikon felt a lot more comfortable in my hands. I̢۪m quite happy with my choice, but now I̢۪m thinking about D200.

After doing a great deal of research on this subject and having owned a 300D at one point I would say, lens considerations aside, the D50 will produce better images.

Bodies come and go, lenses are forever.
a 300 has to be cheaper to buy than a D50 i would imagine, so if you are on a tight budget then you'd have more for lenses if you went with the 300.
I tossed and turned between teh 300 and D70. The 300 was about $300 cheaper, and i have not regretted the choice. Regardless which body I got, i knew i'd be upgrading in a year or 2 anyway.

I think Nikons produce noisier images than do canons. I also think there are more opportunities for used canon goodies, further stretching a had to make buck these days.

I had a choice between a Minolta ????? and a 350D. I already have a Canon EOS300 film camera with a 300mm lens. What made me choose the Canon350D above any other was that the lenses were interchangeble. I upgraded from a small fujifilm (3.3MP) to the 350D.

Must say that I love it. Due to the fact that the design of the 300 film and 350D is almost the same, I can practise diferent settings on the 350D and then use these on the 300 Film.

I think the speed and processing of the 350D is better than that of the 300D. Friend of mine has the 300D. Also takes nice photos.

MY VOTE therefore goes to the 350D. Would also love to get my hands on the 5D though.

I know some people will disagree with me on this method but when I was trying to decide on which camera to buy (d70 or 20d) I found looking at the pictures taken with each camera with the equipment browser on this site helped me a lot. Granted, lighting and composition have a lot to do with how good a photo is but it gave me a good idea of what the "average" photographer is doing with the cameras.
