Make it a set of exclusive challenges, i.e. enter any of the following:
- Best 2006 Portraiture
- Best 2006 Nature
- Best 2006 Studio
- Best 2006 Other

PS: Anyone know how many members were eligible to enter best of 2005? i.e. What was the theoritical maximum number of entries.

I like the idea of best-of categories, but I'm not sure they need to be exclusive, or in any case it might be "enter no more than 2 of the following categories", I donno. As for the category list itself, That seems fairly arbitrary. A suggested alternative:

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Landscape/Seascape
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Animals
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Other Nature
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Candids/Photojournalism
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Portraiture (of People)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Other

I donno, hard to make a short-list, isn't it? But a category called "Nature" is too broad, IMO; it will pit landscapes, bug macros, wildlife shots and flower shots against each other, and still present the same "apples and oranges" judging problem. Ditto "street photography" of people vs studio portraits or formal portraiture done outdoors.

~2600 members as of today. So, we are at about 30% participation now.

By the way, if we split the challenge into categories, DNMC here I come! We will put the unspeakable back into comment field...

Wouldn't the best of a year need to be all the blue ribbons put in a challenge together to see the BEST of those winners? I thougth it was odd that yuor best photo was suppose to be one that wasn't entered in a challenge.

You are assuming people are shooting exclusively for DPC challenge submissions. I don't think that's true. :)

There's two downsides to that: unavoidable popularity conmtest due to complete loss of anonymity, and the rather unapalatble fact that we'd be telling some blue-ribbon winners their shots were nowhere NEAR as good as other blue-ribbon winners'. Plus the fact that, depending on the nature of the particular challenges, many would argue that the top 10 in challenge "X" were all "better" than the blue-ribbon winner in challenge "Y".

This "Best Of" is sort of a catchall to incorporate the great shots you took that never qualified for a particular challenge.
