I took this photo with my Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX APO OS last night and was amazed at the detail I was able to get with it. It's like having a little telescope. Anyway, just wanted to share.

Very nice shot, John. What kind of post-processing did you do? Also, can I assume this was at 400mm?

I just purchased a Kenko 1.4x tele-extender and am anxiously awaiting delivery. I have the EF 300mm f/4 (non-IS) lens and can't wait to see what I can get with that combo... Moon-shots are definitely on my list.

The only post processing I did was sharpen slightly and darken the image slightly to enhance the craters. I never knew taking photos of the moon would be so difficult. I really had to play with the settings to get a usable image. And yes, this was taken at 400mm (640mm when you factor the 1.6 crop factor of the 300D)

I know what you mean. If you rely on the camera's auto exposure feature, you'll get grossly over exposed results. I've learned that moon shots need to be exposed as though it were the middle of the day (e.g., f/16 at 1/125 sec).

Great shot! It is difficult to get a good moon shot. I as able to get a good crescent and half moon shot with my G6 and a Kenko 2x teleconverter but I had a very hard time getting a full moon shot.

With my Nion I can do spot metering which does a pretty good job of moon exposure (from my experience). One of the few times where true spot metering seems to really come in handy. Now if I just had a better lens tyo shoot it with... ;)
