Being that the Yooper GTG#3 was post-poned today, I decide to run over to Teal Lake to watch the 11th Annual Radar Runs. Basically it is a competition to see how fast you can fly on a snowmobile without wiping out. I had only been there a few minutes, with my L lens hanging off the 300d, when the organizer of the event came up and asked who I was shooting for. I told him no one , ust myself. He then asked me if I would be willing to shoot some pics for their web site. He in turn would provide me lunch and let me go out onto the run itself. Sounded cool to me. Here's a few pics. It's not eay catching these guys as they fly by! I was happy that I got as many good shots as I did - way more than I am posting here. I think John - the organizer will be happy. Feel free to leave comments. This is the first time I have ever shot any type sporting event.

nope - not one wipe out. Oh well - everyone had a good time.
Thanks ClubJuggle - I tried to make sure I got shots they would be happy with. I'll be delivering their CD on Monday

definitely worked out well. The only thing I did tell the guy is that if he puts the images on his web site he has to give credit to me. Publicity can be sweet.

Nice shots, good job.
I also like the one of the guy sitting on his snowmobile watching the action - really good composition and exposure.

Once it is up you can create an HTML archive of it in case you want to show someone later and "Oops, The site no longer exists!" |

Nice shots. I have shot race cars quite a bit, mostly with a little Olympus Stylus pocket camera, but now with my 20D.
It seems like a good way to go for fast moving action is to pick your spot and your amount of zoom and then as the subject goes by, you pan along with them. It really helps to have a fast camera so you can start shooting when they are a little too far away and then pan with them as they pass. Usually you can get 1 or 2 shots of the complete subject as they pass and several partials that are good for showing the action. I also learned to go to a little larger aperture and slower shutter with cars so that they get blurred wheels and don't just look like they are parked in front of you. Might work w/ these guys too. |
